There was finally a Biden staffer who decided to not take the Fifth Amendment. Former White House chief of staff Ron Klain appeared before the House Oversight Committee yesterday, and had lots to say about his former boss and others.
Now, let’s begin with the full understanding that Ron Klain was one hundred percent behind Joe Biden. The man literally sobbed when he left the job at the White House about how fantastic Grandpa Joe was. But Ron Klain was still hanging around the White House and the Bidens even after he officially left the chief of staff position. Klain was part of the debate prep team at Camp David before old Joe figuratively folded up and died on stage, and amidst the many excuses for Biden’s poor performance, the allegation that he was “overprepared” was aimed to stick to Klain.
Since that debate, Ron Klain has found himself on the outside of the Biden inner circle, even though he was flagged as being part of the “Politburo” that helped run the White House during the Biden administration. While it is no surprise that the House Oversight Committee called him to testify, no one knew if Klain would follow the path of Dr. Kevin O’Connor, and aides Anthony Bernal and Annie Tomasini, and take the Fifth Amendment.
Ron Klain was apparently cooperative, credible, and willing to spill some tea on what happened inside the White House – including that old Joe was definitely slowing down by the end.
In the sitdown, Klain denied that Biden, now 82, lacked the cognitive acuity to govern or that he was too old to run for re-election in 2024, according to a source familiar with his remarks.
But the longtime adviser admitted his boss was “less energetic,” had a poorer memory and frequently mixed up names — a problem that worsened with time, the source added.
Elsewhere in his interview, Klain divulged that he’d donated $5,000 for then-first son Hunter Biden’s legal defense fund at the behest of attorney Abbe Lowell, who repped the younger Biden.
Klain told the Oversight panel he was not aware Biden was taking Ambien ahead of the performance, a claim Hunter Biden made in a Monday interview with YouTube personality Andrew Callaghan.
That’s a lot to unpack right there. First of all, Ron Klain wants to insist that Joe Biden wasn’t too old to be president – but then admits that his memory was “poorer” and he was losing energy. Klain’s rationale probably was that the “Politburo” could just keep running things during a second Biden term, with Joe occasionally chiming in and Jill Biden playing Edith Wilson. Second, Klain’s loyalty to the Bidens, with him slobbering over Joe as “the best dad EVER,” led him to put his money where his mouth was and chip in for poor widdle Hunter’s defense (and Abbe Lowell’s paycheck). And third, if Joe was indeed on Ambien (per Hunter’s claims), then Klain, who again, was on the debate prep team but no longer at the White House, didn’t know about it – which would make the blame that the debate prep team took look VERY misplaced.
Every Biden aide has pled the fifth and won’t answer questions.

But Ron Klain didn’t just talk about Joe Biden. He also named names on who had their worries about Joe Biden, and Hillary Clinton and Jake Sullivan are not happy campers right now.
Ex-President Joe Biden’s former chief of staff Ron Klain told House investigators that Hillary Clinton approached him with concerns about the octogenarian leader’s political viability “by 2024,” Fox News Digital has learned.
… the ex-secretary of state and former Biden national security adviser Jake Sullivan both “approached Ron Klain stating they believed Joe Biden was not politically viable” months before he dropped his re-election bid in July 2024, the source said.
Sullivan told Klain that Biden “was less effective in 2024 compared to 2022,” the source said.
It’s not immediately clear if Biden’s mental acuity was the reasoning for their doubts, nor if they made the case to Klain together or separately.
But it’s a significant indictment coming from top national Democrats of Biden in general, long before concerns about his fitness for office within the party were made public knowledge.
Jake Sullivan, loyal yes-man to Biden who should have been fired for the Afghanistan withdrawl debacle, put out an immediate denial. Hillary Clinton’s team tried to soften what was said and spin it a little.
A Clinton spokesman did not dispute Klain’s account, but said Clinton was concerned with how the question of Biden’s age was being handled politically in light of the attacks and questions he was facing.
“Jake did not have a conversation with Ron about Joe Biden running for president before the debate,” a representative for Sullivan, Adrienne Watson, told CNN.
Let’s remember that Ron Klain was being deposed under oath, so I really doubt he would be specifically name dropping Jake Sullivan and Hillary Clinton for the fun of it. Note how carefully each camp has phrased its response. Sullivan’s spokeman says that Sullivan and Klain didn’t talk about Biden “running for president,” but that’s not the same as talking about being “effective” and “viable” if he continued on in office – either before or after the fateful debate. And both Clintons immediately threw their support behind Kamala Harris when Biden dropped out – and I mean within NINETY MINUTES of Biden announcing he was out and about an hour after Biden had officially endorsed Kamala – so it doesn’t strain the imagination to think that Ron Klain and Hillary Clinton had exchanged words about Biden’s political future.
The testimony that Ron Klain gave surely gave everyone in the Biden inner circle a significant amount of heartburn, but it highlights the new risk now facing those in the inner circle. If someone like Ron Klain, who was apparently iced out post-debate, is willing to talk, then there are probably other aides out there who were ditched or dissed over time (Anita Dunn, maybe?) who will also be willing to talk. Not every aide is going to have the loyalty of Dr. O’Connor, Bernal, and Tomasini and invoke the Fifth Amendment – which is their right, and protects them from criminal charges, but invites all the speculation in the court of public opinion – and Team Biden has to be holding their breath and wondering how many others are going to follow in the footsteps of Ron Klain, and start dropping more names.
