An Ohio mother is facing murder charges after allegedly stabbing her adult daughter to death with a decorative sword pulled from the living room wall during a family argument.
Terri Niner, 49, reportedly used a collectible “short sword” belonging to her husband to fatally stab 32-year-old Ayla Mangan in the back on July 10 during a fight at their Canton home, according to local reports.
Authorities say Niner called 911 after the stabbing, claiming the confrontation had escalated over “dumb stuff” and that her daughter — who was autistic and functioned at the level of a 13-year-old — had “thrown herself backwards” onto the blade.
“I grabbed the knife from her, and she went to throw herself backwards… and when she went to throw herself backwards, it got her,” Niner allegedly told the dispatcher. “I thought it only cut her a little bit.”
Emergency responders found Mangan critically injured. She did not survive.
The sword, described as part of her husband Francis “Jay” Niner’s collection, was normally on display in the family’s living room. Jay, who is Mangan’s stepfather, has also been charged — with obstruction — for allegedly lying to investigators and trying to protect his wife by withholding information.
At Terri Niner’s bond hearing, senior trial counsel Elise Hamilton told the court the allegations were extremely serious, noting Mangan’s vulnerability due to her autism. Niner’s bond was set at $500,000.
Both Terri and Jay Niner were arrested on Thursday and are expected to appear in court on July 16.
