A Michigan family is grieving the tragic loss of 20-year-old Sarah Carroll, who was killed in what police are calling a murder-suicide over the weekend.
Westland authorities say they responded to a call about a shooting on Saturday, August 30, where they discovered two people dead. Police have not publicly named the victims, but Sarah’s family confirmed her identity to multiple outlets, including WXYZ, FOX 2, and Local 4.
According to investigators, Sarah’s ex-boyfriend allegedly called 911, told dispatchers he had shot her, and then turned the gun on himself. Witnesses told the Westland Community News that Sarah had confronted her ex at an apartment complex when he pulled out a shotgun, shot her, and then took his own life.
Sarah’s family revealed that she had been stalked by her ex-boyfriend for the past two months and was in the process of obtaining a protection order against him. Her mother, Jennifer Thomas, told reporters, “She was alive, she was funny, she was smart, she had everything going for her.”
Her father, James Carroll, shared his heartbreak, saying, “She was loved by everybody. Everybody she met. She was wonderful. I’m going to miss my baby.”
Sarah was a driven young woman studying to become a physician assistant and is being remembered for her ambition, warmth, and the way she lit up every room she walked into.
A GoFundMe has been launched to help cover funeral costs, with organizers writing, “Sarah was so full of life — smart, brave, strong, and with a smile that lit up every room she entered. She was only just beginning her journey, and losing her at such a young age is something no family should ever have to go through.”
The investigation remains ongoing.
