President Donald Trump announced plans to display a White House portrait of his predecessor Joe Biden that will prominently feature the Democrat’s autopen device, which remains under federal investigation.
Trump revealed details about the portrait during a Friday meeting with Daily Caller reporter Reagan Reese, showing sketches of what he described as Biden’s official portrait for display in the coming weeks.
“We put up a picture of the autopen,” Trump stated while presenting the portrait concept to the reporter in the White House.
The president did not specify whether the portrait would show Biden alongside the autopen device or feature the signing machine independently.
Trump demonstrated the planned placement for what he calls the “Presidential Wall of Fame” in the Rose Garden, showing reporter Reese various portrait options under consideration.
“I think the black and white – same picture, but black and white. Yeah, and I’m not using that one with the smile,” Trump explained during the presentation.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt and Communications Director Steven Cheung assisted Trump in displaying the different portrait alternatives to the Daily Caller reporter.
Trump indicated the portrait selection would generate significant reaction, telling the reporter, “This is going to be very controversial.”
The president referenced the ongoing investigation into Biden’s autopen usage, which Trump previously characterized as “disgraceful” conduct during the former administration.
“It’s true though, now they’re finding the autopen, which should not have been used,” Trump stated during the portrait discussion.
Trump directed Attorney General Pam Bondi and White House Counsel David Warrington to conduct a comprehensive investigation into Biden’s autopen practices early in his current term.
Congressional Republicans have simultaneously launched their own separate investigation into the matter, working parallel to the executive branch inquiry.
Trump issued a memorandum describing the autopen situation as “one of the most dangerous and concerning scandals in American history” involving potential abuse of presidential authority.
The memorandum alleged that Biden’s staff used the device to “conceal Biden’s cognitive decline and assert Article II authority” without proper oversight or transparency.
Trump’s directive requires forensic examination of every document signed during Biden’s presidency to determine authentic signatures versus autopen reproductions.
The investigation covers pardons, executive orders, judicial appointments and proclamations spanning Biden’s entire four-year term in office.
The autopen device has been utilized by previous administrations from both parties to manage the substantial volume of presidential documents requiring signatures.
The Justice Department has recognized autopen usage by presidents for routine legislation and pardons under both Democratic and Republican administrations for decades.
Trump acknowledged his own limited autopen usage, stating the device serves appropriate functions for responding to correspondence from citizens across the country.
The Oversight Project conducted an extensive review revealing nearly every document from Biden’s 2021-2025 presidency contained identical autopen signatures.
The only exception identified was Biden’s handwritten letter announcing his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential campaign, which bore his authentic signature.
Biden’s autopen reliance coincided with reduced public appearances and heavily scripted interactions with lawmakers, officials, and donors during his presidency.
House Oversight Chairman James Comer has demanded testimony from Biden’s former senior staff members including Mike Donilon, Anita Dunn, Ron Klain, Bruce Reed and Steve Ricchetti.
Comer cited allegations from the book “Original Sin” by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’ Alex Thompson claiming “five people were running the country, and Joe Biden was at best a senior member of the board.”
The committee issued subpoenas for Biden’s physician Kevin O’Connor and additional White House aides who allegedly participated in concealing Biden’s condition.
Biden told the New York Times that he “made every decision” regarding commutations and pardons that bore his signature during his presidency.
Biden explained his autopen usage to the Times, stating the large volume of commutations made individual signing impractical for processing.
“We’re talking about a whole lot of people,” Biden said regarding the scope of commutations issued during his final months in office.
Biden signed off on criteria and standards for determining which federal convicts received reduced sentences rather than reviewing individual cases.
