Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was helping a woman involved in a domestic violence incident before a car crash that left him hospitalized, police said.
Giuliani and his driver, Theodore Goodman, were driving on Interstate 93 near Manchester, New Hampshire, around 10 p.m. on Aug. 30 when their car was struck from behind, New Hampshire State Police (NHSP) said in a news release.
Both Goodman and Giuliani, as well as the driver of the other vehicle, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken by ambulance to area hospitals for treatment, NHSP said.
Giuliani was diagnosed with a fractured thoracic vertebra, multiple lacerations and contusions, as well as injuries to his left arm and lower leg, his head of security, Michael Ragusa, said in a post on X on Aug. 31.
Ragusa also said Giuliani and Goodman were “assisting a domestic violence victim” prior to the crash. NHSP confirmed Ragusa’s report and provided more details about the incident in an update on Sept. 1.
