Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) latest financial disclosure belied her denials that she is a millionaire, destroying the narrative of a “working mom with debt” that she has been trying to put forth.
The disclosure that Omar filed in May, according to congressional requirements, showed a huge increase in the net worth of two businesses owned by her husband, Tim Mynett.
A winery in Santa Rosa, California, that previously was valued at $15,000 and $50,000 was now listed between $1 and 5 million.
Mynett’s Washington, D.C.-based venture capital firm had an even bigger jump in valuation, from $0 in 2023 to between $5 and 25 million by the end of 2024.
“Secret” millionaire?
When online speculation began to fly in February that Omar was a “secret” millionaire, she pushed back strongly.
“Since getting elected, there has been a coordinated right-wing disinformation campaign claiming all sorts of wild things, including the ridiculous claim I am worth millions of dollars, which is categorically false,” Omar told Business Insider.
“I am a working mom with student loan debt. Unlike some of my colleagues — and similar to most Americans — I am not a millionaire and am raising a family while maintaining a residence in both Minneapolis and DC, which are among the most expensive housing markets in the country,” she added.
Omar did list $100,000 in student loans and credit card debt, but that doesn’t negate the fact that she has millions of dollars in assets together with her husband.
Deception
Mynett and Omar married in March of 2020, five months after her split with ex-husband Ahmed Hirsi. Mynett’s ex-wife Beth claimed at the time of their split that he and Omar were having an affair while he worked as her campaign consultant.
Omar’s sudden fortune–her net worth went up 3500% in one year–and her tangled love life have caused many to question her “aw shucks, I’m just a working mom” routine.
It’s yet another thing not to like about Omar, who has made a name for herself with her obvious anti-Semitism and comments that have been derogatory toward Jews.
She doesn’t bring anything positive to Congress, and it’s sad that she keeps getting re-elected just because she is Muslim and her constituency is primarily Muslim, too.
I don’t think too many of them care whether she’s a millionaire or not, as long as she represents them and their anti-Semitic views.
