President Donald Trump announced Monday that Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City, will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
The announcement marks the first Medal of Freedom recipient of Trump’s second term.
“As President of the United States of America, I am pleased to announce that Rudy Giuliani, the greatest Mayor in the history of New York City, and an equally great American Patriot, will receive THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM, our Country’s highest civilian honor,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
The president continued, “Details as to time and place to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is presented solely at the discretion of the president.
The honor is awarded to individuals who have made “especially meritorious” contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or public endeavors, or other significant achievements.
Trump’s announcement came less than 24 hours after Giuliani was seriously injured in a car accident in New Hampshire, Resist the Mainstream reported Monday.
Giuliani had stopped to assist a domestic violence victim who flagged him down on the roadside, according to a spokesperson.
While waiting for emergency responders to arrive, Giuliani’s rental vehicle was struck from behind at a high rate of speed, per his head of security.
Medical personnel later diagnosed the former mayor with a fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations and contusions and injuries to his left arm and lower leg.
Despite the severity of his injuries, Giuliani’s team reported that he remains in good spirits and is focused on recovering from the crash.
Giuliani served as mayor of New York City from 1994 until 2001.
During his time in office, he gained national prominence for his leadership in the immediate aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
His steady presence at Ground Zero and in press briefings earned him the nickname “America’s Mayor.”
Following his time in City Hall, Giuliani launched a presidential bid in 2008.
Although his campaign was unsuccessful, it reinforced his role as a nationally recognized political figure and Republican leader.
Giuliani later became a prominent ally of Trump.
He supported Trump’s presidency and played a highly visible role in challenging the results of the 2020 election.
Giuliani appeared at multiple press conferences and filed legal cases across several states on behalf of the former president.
Throughout his political career, Giuliani has been both praised and criticized, but he has remained a central figure in Republican politics for more than two decades.
Trump’s decision to honor him with the Medal of Freedom underscores the bond between the two men.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom has been awarded since 1963, when President John F. Kennedy established it by executive order.
Recipients come from fields including politics, sports, business, the arts and national service.
During Trump’s first term, recipients included the late Senator Orrin Hatch, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, golfer Tiger Woods, South African golf legend Gary Player and conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh, who received the award during the 2020 State of the Union Address.
The award has also been given in previous administrations to figures such as civil rights leader Rosa Parks, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, Mother Teresa and actor John Wayne.
Giuliani joins that list as Trump’s first honoree in his second term.
The White House has not yet announced when or where the ceremony for Giuliani’s award will take place.
