Cyndi Lauper and Cher managed to turn an iconic ’80s pop anthem into a total bummer by simply adding politics.
Lauper’s farewell tour in Los Angeles, California, was bookended with a star-studded soiree featuring heavy-hitters in the music industry, including Cher. The duo teamed up to sing “Girls Just Want To Have Fundamental Rights,” while dressed in what appear to be Twister game pads with sleeves.

Though this may be her final tour, Lauper isn’t going to retire in the traditional sense.
“I’m supposed to be doing [the musical adaptation of the 1988 film] ‘Working Girl’ after the tour,” she told People. “That’s what I’ve basically been doing for 10 years. The weird thing about the Broadway thing is it takes a long time.”
“So, it’s not like I’m not going to be working. I’m just not going to be touring. Touring is a whole different animal.”
But X users just couldn’t keep their opinions to themselves:
My cousin had young female family member that graduated and is in her residency right now. You should have seen all the barriers to entry. For one she had to get up every morning go to class and bitch about the barriers to entry. Someday I hope the world changes so she can heal.

Ok. Lets all guess what “fundamental rights” girls don’t have.

They don’t want to be preached to entertainment that they paid for.

Songs with a political message. Can’t think of anything more joyless.

Both in their 70’s
(Cher nearly 80), rich and without a clue how regular people live their lives, but with egos so large they can never leave the stage. Who on earth still wants to see either of them?— Harley Butter Bee (@HarleyButterBee) September 1, 2025
Girls & guys have now and have always had the fundamental right to not react to every bodily urge. It’s unfathomable that people actually celebrate the brutal (and it is brutal) murder of defenseless unborn babies.

How sad to work so hard and so long only to waste the time you have left becoming a sad deranged caricature of yourself.
