A Vermont man has been arrested after a brutal road rage incident left another driver hospitalized and facing possible permanent vision loss.
According to court documents obtained by WPTZ, WCAX, and Seven Days Vermont, 44-year-old Aaron Williams has been charged with aggravated assault and maiming following the alleged attack on August 26. Williams has pleaded not guilty and is currently being held without bail.
The victim, 46-year-old Ronnie Bushway II, told police that Williams cut him off in traffic and then brake-checked him before both men got out of their vehicles. That’s when, according to investigators, Williams allegedly shoved his thumbs into Bushway’s eyes and punched him repeatedly.
Bushway’s injuries are severe. WCAX reports that he has already undergone multiple surgeries and remains hospitalized with limited eyesight. His family says his recovery could take a long time. “There’s been so much going on at the hospital with the doctors,” Bushway’s father told WPTZ. “His wife’s been with him the whole time. I don’t know the recovery timeline, but it sounds like it could be a long time.”
Police say Williams fled the scene after the attack, but dash cam footage from Bushway’s car helped authorities identify him. A bail hearing for Williams is expected to be scheduled in the coming weeks.
