Exactly eight decades ago today, the regime responsible for the worst mass murder during World War II—imperial Japan—finally surrendered, bringing peace to a war-torn world.
Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany killed many millions of innocent people, with up to 10 million deaths laid at Japan’s door, including many Koreans, Thai, Indonesians, and U.S. POWs, among others.
With the mentality that any means were justifiable in pursuit of victory, and that death was preferable both to capture and surrender, Japan was fanatically dedicated to fighting to the last man, woman, and child. Indeed, not only did many Japanese military leaders not wish to surrender after the atom bombs were dropped, but there was an attempted coup against the emperor when he announced his intention of surrendering.
Americans are proud, and rightly so, of having defeated the Nazis, the Italian fascists, and the imperial Japanese, the regimes responsible for some horrific war crimes. The completion of ours and our Allies’ victory was on Sept. 2, 1945. One of the worst and bloodiest conflicts in world history had ended.
Yes, eight decades ago today, representatives of imperial Japan surrendered on the USS Missouri. The evil empire had been taken down, the sacrifice of our men had been justified, and the world was at peace.
