Rosie O’Donnell is walking back comments she made after the tragic Minneapolis church school shooting.
The liberal actress and comic had claimed the shooter was a White supremacist, a Republican, and a MAGA supporter. None of it was true.
Her remarks came last Thursday in a video, shortly after learning about the attack that killed two children and injured 18 others, including 15 kids.
O’Donnell said the violence reminded her of Columbine and pointed to the Catholic setting of the shooting before adding: “What do you know? It was a white guy, Republican, MAGA person. What do you know? White supremacists.”
By Sunday, she issued an apology. “I did not do my due diligence before I made that emotional statement,” O’Donnell admitted. “I messed up, and when you mess up, you fess up. I’m sorry.”
Her apology wasn’t well received. Critics online called it “the most unapologetic apology ever” and accused her of trying to save face. One commenter wrote, “She’s not sorry, she still means exactly what she said.”
Some pointed to a deeper problem. “This is what’s keeping the country divided,” one person noted. “So many mistruths being spread on both sides. People need to fact check before spreading political claims.”
The FBI said the gunman, who opened fire during a Mass at Annunciation Catholic Church, was driven by anti-Catholic, anti-religious, and antisemitic views. His manifesto included messages like “Israel must fall” and Holocaust-related slurs.
