Ron DeSantis has been taking on the establishment for years.
But he just called out one racket that hits every American homeowner in the wallet.
And Ron DeSantis just used one simple analogy that exposed the biggest scam in America.
DeSantis drops truth bomb about property taxes that has local governments scrambling
Look, we all know the drill with property taxes.
Every year, like clockwork, you get that bill in the mail that makes you want to throw something at the wall.
Your house went up in value – something you had zero control over – and suddenly the government thinks they deserve a bigger cut of your wealth.
Ron DeSantis finally said what every homeowner has been thinking for decades.
“You should own your property free and clear,” DeSantis told a packed roundtable in Jacksonville. “I think to say that someone that’s been in their house for 35 years just has to keep ponying up money – you don’t own your home, if that’s the case.”
Then the Florida Governor delivered the perfect analogy that cuts right to the heart of this government shake-down.
“If I go to Best Buy and buy a flat screen TV and put it on the wall, I got to pay a sales tax on it, right? But I don’t keep paying tax on it every year,” DeSantis explained. “That’s not how we do things. If you’re going to tax something, you tax it at the transaction, and then let people actually enjoy their private property, free and clear of the government.”
Boom.
That right there is the kind of common-sense thinking that cuts through decades of government double-talk about why they need to keep bleeding homeowners dry.
You buy something, you pay the tax, you own it.
But somehow when it comes to the biggest investment most Americans will ever make – their home – the government has convinced us we need to keep paying rent to them forever.
The numbers that should make every taxpayer furious
Here’s what’s really happening in Florida, and it’s probably happening in your state too.
According to Redfin, three of the five major U.S. metros where property tax bills have exploded the most since the pandemic are all in Florida.
Jacksonville property taxes jumped 59.6% – that’s not a typo – to $228 per month between 2019 and 2024.
Tampa got hit with a 56.7% increase to $250 monthly.
Miami homeowners are now paying $367 per month, up 48.1% from just five years ago.
“You talk about a family of four, having the median home price that is purchased in Florida – that’s a pretty hefty tax bill right there, when you come in after buying a home, when you consider what the average income is throughout the United States of America – the math just doesn’t add up,” DeSantis said.
The man gets it.
While working families are getting crushed by inflation, housing costs, and stagnant wages, local governments are treating property tax increases like they hit the lottery.
DeSantis called out exactly what’s happening: “It’s a gusher of revenue that’s going into the coffers, and so rather than returning that money to the taxpayers, they’ve basically been spending it.”

Watch what happened when DeSantis started talking about actually cutting property taxes.
Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan – a Democrat, naturally – called property tax cuts “fiscally irresponsible.”
Think about that for a second.
Letting taxpayers keep more of their own money is “fiscally irresponsible,” but growing government budgets by 60% is somehow responsible stewardship.
Deegan whined that the average homeowner would only save “about a dollar” per month with the proposed cuts, as if that’s not worth fighting for.
“But what does that mean for seniors who tell us what they need like pools or meals for seniors? Or like housing that is affordable. All the money is gone for affordable housing right now,” she complained.
Here’s the thing politicians like Deegan never want to admit: it’s not their money.
DeSantis isn’t backing down
DeSantis announced he’s working on a constitutional amendment that will go before Florida voters in November 2026.
If it passes, it would eliminate property taxes on primary residences entirely.
“If you’re a Florida resident, and you have a primary residence here, your homesteaded property, I think you should be able to own that free and clear of the government,” DeSantis declared.
This isn’t some half-measure or political theater.
This is a fundamental challenge to one of the government’s biggest revenue streams – and they know it.
DeSantis pointed out that local government budgets have exploded over the past four or five years, not because of some crisis or emergency, but because rising property values gave them more money to waste.
“I don’t think anybody can justify the increases that we’ve seen in many of these local government budgets over the last four or five years,” he said.
The Governor’s plan would force these bureaucrats to focus on what the government is actually supposed to do: “we want education, we want law enforcement and fire and other first responders. You know, some of the water infrastructure, but we don’t need some of the stuff that’s been spent money on.”
Why this matters for every American homeowner
Look, what DeSantis is doing in Florida isn’t just about Florida.
This is happening everywhere.
Republican governors in Illinois, Kansas, Montana, Pennsylvania, and Texas are all pushing similar property tax relief measures.
Yale Law School professor David Schleicher explained exactly what’s driving this: “Property taxes are based on wealth, not income, though, and as a result, property taxes as a percentage of income increased for homeowners in areas where property prices increased. Homeowners got angry about this increase in annual taxes and are a powerful force in politics.”
Translation: politicians have been using the housing boom to quietly rob homeowners blind, and people are finally fighting back.
DeSantis gets it: “What happened is that someone that bought a house for $300,000 10 years ago is now being told their house is worth $750,000. That’s an unrealized gain, you haven’t sold your house for that much. But somehow your property tax bill is going up.”
That’s the scam right there.

You didn’t ask for your house to be worth more on paper.
You’re not getting any benefit from that increased “value” unless you sell.
But the government acts like you won the lottery and demands their cut anyway.
It’s taxation without representation all over again, except this time the British aren’t even trying to hide it.
DeSantis is showing every other governor in America what real leadership looks like: stand up for taxpayers, call out government waste, and fight for the principle that when you buy something, you should actually own it.
The property tax racket has been going on for so long that most people just accept it as normal.
But there’s nothing normal about the government forcing you to pay rent on property you already own.
Ron DeSantis just reminded America what real ownership looks like – and local politicians across the country are terrified that voters might start demanding it.
