A Los Angeles City Council member unleashed fury at Home Depot on Friday, accusing the chain of enabling immigration raids and vowing to block a new store in her district.
“Take your orange aprons somewhere else. Home Depot has no place in Eagle Rock,” Councilmember Ysabel Jurado wrote in a fiery Instagram post.
Documents filed with the LA city planning department show Home Depot wants to open a superstore in Eagle Rock Plaza, replacing a shuttered Macy’s. The project has already triggered backlash.
Jurado, the daughter of undocumented Filipino immigrants, accused the company of staying silent while Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) repeatedly targets day laborers outside its stores. She pointed to a raid Thursday in Westlake, claiming it was the fourth at that location since June.
“These raids are part of a disturbing pattern across Los Angeles, with ICE repeatedly targeting Home Depot parking lots – common gathering spots for day laborers – without judicial warrants, in clear violations of people’s rights. And yet, Home Depot has remained silent,” she charged.
Video obtained by the Los Angeles Times shows federal agents pulling up in a black van, rifles in hand, and rushing street vendors near the Westlake store. Tear gas was deployed as vendors fled. The Times reported at least 15 arrests were made.
Just weeks earlier, the same location was the site of “Operation Trojan Horse,” where agents jumped from a Penske truck and arrested more than a dozen alleged illegal immigrants. That raid came days after a federal court restricted broad ICE sweeps across California.
The backlash has unfolded against the backdrop of chaos in LA. President Donald Trump sent nearly 5,000 troops—including 4,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines—after anti-ICE riots engulfed the city. Protesters torched cars and American flags while clashing violently with law enforcement.
“When your name becomes associated with terror, and you refuse to speak, you become complicit,” Jurado argued. “Home Depot has chosen power and profit over the working people who sustain it.”
Home Depot pushed back, insisting it plays no role in immigration raids. “We aren’t notified that ICE activities are going to happen, and we’re not requesting them,” a company spokesperson said. “In many cases, we don’t know that arrests have taken place until after they’re over. We’re required to follow all federal and local rules and regulations in every market where we operate.”
But Jurado promised to fight the Eagle Rock project, framing it as a threat to her community. “I unequivocally oppose Home Depot coming to Eagle Rock Plaza, a mall that has been a gathering place for the Filipino community in Los Angeles. I will not allow violence to take root in our neighborhoods. Our communities deserve safety, dignity, and businesses that fight for the people, not against them.”
Federal officials defended the recent raids. DHS confirmed eight arrests in the August 28 operation near the Westlake Home Depot. Among those detained were six Guatemalans, one Salvadoran, and one Mexican national. Three had extensive criminal records, while another had a final deportation order.
“Under President Trump and Secretary Noem, if you break the law, you will face the consequences,” DHS told Fox News. “Criminal illegal aliens are not welcome in the U.S.”
