Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani suffered a fractured vertebra and other non-life-threatening injuries in a car crash in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Saturday. He was a passenger in a vehicle driven by an adviser when it was struck from behind by a 19-year-old driver, state police said.
Giuliani was taken to a local hospital, where his staff reported he was expected to make a full recovery.
What happened on the highway?
State police said the collision occurred shortly before 10 p.m. on Interstate 93 northbound in Manchester, near where troopers were handling a separate domestic violence call. Theodore Goodman drove Giuliani in a Ford Bronco when 19-year-old Lauren Kemp of Concord struck them from behind in a Honda HR-V. The impact sent both vehicles into the median and caused significant damage.
Emergency crews already on scene for the earlier incident saw the crash and immediately rushed to help. Giuliani, Goodman and Kemp were taken to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities closed the highway for about an hour during the response.
How serious are Giuliani’s injuries?
Giuliani’s head of security, Michael Ragusa, said the 81-year-old sustained a fractured bone in his spine along with leg and arm injuries. He said the former mayor was conscious, responsive and in good spirits.
Ragusa claimed that just before the crash, Giuliani had stopped to help a domestic violence victim, called 911 for her and waited until troopers arrived. He also emphasized the incident did not appear intentional.
Later, he said Giuliani was recovering well and hoped to return to work within days.
What happens next?
Police said the crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed. Local outlets reported he had attended a baseball game in Manchester earlier that day.
