A Texas teenager has been arrested after allegedly shooting a relative during a family baptism celebration that spiraled into violence, according to police.
Leonardo Asis Campos Torres, 19, was taken into custody in the early hours of July 27 after gunfire erupted at a gathering to celebrate the baptism of 35-year-old Cristian Gabriel Montes’ son, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by Dallas-based Fox affiliate KDFW.
Police say Torres and Montes were related and had both attended the family event in Balch Springs when an argument between them turned violent. The dispute reportedly began after Torres was accused of firing a handgun at Montes’ vehicle earlier that evening.
According to witnesses, the confrontation escalated quickly. Several family members told police they saw Torres and Montes arguing before Torres allegedly pulled out a 9mm handgun and fired. Montes was shot at least twice — once in the chest and once in the back — according to medical staff at Baylor University Medical Center, where he was rushed for treatment. Investigators believe Montes may have been turning away or falling when at least one of the shots was fired.
At the scene, police recovered multiple spent shell casings near a Chevrolet Tahoe, suggesting several rounds were fired during the altercation.
After his arrest, Torres allegedly confessed to shooting Montes but claimed it was self-defense. He told police that Montes attacked him, prompting him to grab the handgun and fire. Torres’ booking photo shows visible injuries, including two black eyes and bruises, though authorities have not confirmed how he sustained them.
Torres was booked into the Dallas County Jail on charges related to the shooting and remains in custody as the investigation continues.
