A heartbreaking tragedy has rocked Lincoln, Nebraska, after a 4-month-old baby girl died from a traumatic brain injury consistent with shaking — and now both of her parents are behind bars.
Ryan Greenwood, 36, and his wife, Tanya Greenwood, 28, have been arrested and are being held on suspicion of child abuse resulting in death, according to the Lincoln Police Department (LPD). Court records obtained by local outlet KOLN also reveal the couple is accused of denying their daughter medical assistance that could have saved her life.
Police say the incident unfolded on the morning of Thursday, August 14, when Ryan called 911 around 5:30 a.m. to report that his infant daughter had died. Officers arrived at the couple’s apartment, where both parents were present.
An official autopsy determined the baby died from a traumatic brain injury consistent with shaking, while a child abuse specialist concluded that her fatal injuries were non-accidental. Investigators also learned that immediate medical attention might have improved the infant’s chance of survival.
Ryan reportedly told police that the day before her death, he had been “playing rough” with his daughter, after which she began crying uncontrollably. He claimed he gave her a bottle and put her to bed but later found her unresponsive and cold. He told authorities he attempted CPR, called his mother, and then finally dialed 911.
Tanya, however, shared a different account. She said she had been grocery shopping on August 13 and returned home to hear “the worst cry I had ever heard.” She told investigators she wanted to take the baby to the hospital, but Ryan insisted they shouldn’t seek medical help.
Court documents also reveal troubling details about the couple’s past. Tanya allegedly admitted that she had seen Ryan shake their daughter out of frustration before. Investigators also discovered that, after the baby’s death, Tanya searched online for information about shaken baby syndrome. Records further show that Tanya had previously texted Ryan about unexplained injuries she noticed on their daughter.
Ryan was arrested on Tuesday, August 26, and booked into Lancaster County Jail, while Tanya was arrested and booked on Thursday, August 28. Both remain in custody on $1.5 million bonds each.
Police are continuing their investigation and are urging anyone with information to contact them at 402-441-6000, referencing case number C5-070524.
