A Texas woman has been arrested and charged with murder after authorities say she intentionally left her 15-month-old baby locked inside a hot car for hours, leading to the child’s death.
Police say 27-year-old Vanessa Esquivel drove to her workplace in Frisco on August 16 and parked in the 3200 block of Preston Road around 2:00 p.m. According to investigators, Esquivel allegedly left her infant inside a vehicle she knew did not have working air conditioning as outside temperatures soared to at least 95 degrees.
The baby remained inside the sweltering car for over two hours while Esquivel worked, police allege. Weather tracking services recorded the high temperature in Dallas that day as 96 degrees.
Authorities were alerted to the tragedy after receiving a call from Medical City Plano hospital, where the child had been taken. Frisco police determined the baby died from heat-related injuries caused by being trapped inside the car.
Esquivel was arrested on August 20 and is currently being held at the Collin County Jail on a $250,000 bond, according to online records. No upcoming court date has been scheduled at this time.
If convicted, Esquivel faces a possible sentence of five years to life in prison.
