NEW ORLEANS, LA – Documents recently uncovered reveal a troubling history of child abuse involving Hilda Vasquez, a mother previously convicted of cruelty to her son, Brian. Despite the severity of the injuries documented, Vasquez regained custody of her son, raising questions about the legal system’s handling of the case.
In 2013, a three-month-old baby, identified in court records as Vasquez’s son, suffered significant injuries. The documents describe a harrowing scene where Vasquez and her boyfriend were watching television when the child began to scream as if in severe pain. According to Vasquez, the baby vomited blood and milk and stopped breathing, prompting her to call for emergency medical assistance.
The injuries listed in the court records were extensive: a punctured lung, retinal hemorrhages, fractures to both legs, and a skull fracture with swelling. Medical professionals diagnosed the case as child abuse, yet Vasquez offered no explanation for how these injuries occurred.
Initially, supervised visits were deemed necessary, with specific recommendations for the visits to occur in jail under the watchful eyes of deputies and a Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) social worker. However, the situation changed when Vasquez was granted probation.
In 2017, Vasquez faced arrest again, this time for violating her probation. The New Orleans Police Department and other agencies are expected to delve deeper into the court records as part of their ongoing investigation.
Family members of Vasquez assert that she is a victim of domestic violence, suggesting a possible connection between her experiences and the abuse inflicted on her son. However, this claim is not reflected in the official documents.
Neither DCFS nor the Orleans Public Defender’s Office have provided comments on the case. As the investigation progresses, all involved parties are determined to uncover the truth and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
