Authorities in Texas say a tragic car plunge that killed a mother and her infant daughter back in April was no accident — it was an intentional act.
On April 25, 39-year-old Crystal Hall-Njepu was driving her Kia SUV in Channelview, just east of Houston, with her three children — ages 7, 5, and 1 — when the vehicle veered off the road and plunged into the San Jacinto River, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
A Good Samaritan rushed to the scene and managed to rescue the two older children, but Hall-Njepu and her 1-year-old daughter, Annah, tragically drowned. The infant was still strapped into her car seat when authorities recovered the vehicle from the water, the Houston Chronicle reported.
On Thursday, August 28, Sheriff Gonzalez confirmed that the incident has been officially ruled a murder-suicide. Investigators discovered a suicide note inside the submerged SUV, confirming Hall-Njepu intentionally drove into the river.
The children’s aunt, Shannon Jackson, has since launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral costs and provide support for the surviving kids, raising more than $17,000 to date.
