Have you heard the news? Mel Gibson’s sequel to The Passion of the Christ, titled The Resurrection of the Christ, is planned to be released in 2027. With Jim Caviezel reprising his role as Jesus, the first part is scheduled for Good Friday, March 26, 2027, and the second part for Ascension Day, May 6, 2027.
The film aims to evoke strong emotions through its depiction. So, let’s ask ourselves, what emotions do Jesus Christ’s Resurrection and Ascension into Heaven evoke within us now? What do we feel as we behold the precious gift of life the Lord gives to us?
This precious gift of life is Jesus Himself. Christ is Life itself; in Christ we come alive, according to Pope Benedict XVI. Remember, during the Last Supper, Jesus said to His disciples: “In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me, because I live and you will live” [John 14:19].
The Newness of Life
The Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus invite us to open our hearts to faith, hope, and love. Accepting this invitation, our lives are “swept up by Christ into the heart of divine life” [CCC 655]. Truly, Our Savior’s victory over death opens the way for us to walk in newness of life with Our Lord dwelling within us.
United with Christ, the boundaries of this world are transcended. We see beyond ourselves and what this world has to offer as we live no longer for ourselves but for Him who for our sake died and was raised [CCC 655]. We are transformed as we live for Our Lord!
In our transformation, we have the joy of knowing nothing “will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” [Romans 8:39]. This divine love is woven into the fabric of our very being by the One who is Life itself. God’s love—made manifest in Jesus—is forever!
Glory to Come
Consider the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary. Upon His Resurrection, Christ came and showed Himself to His disciples. When Christ ascended into Heaven, He did not leave His disciples. Although He was no longer in the flesh, His holy presence remained and continues to remain today. Our Lord’s living spirit is at work within each of us to guide us, strengthen us, and console us.
“Examine yourselves to see whether you are living in faith” [2 Corinthians 13:5]. Do we take the time to examine ourselves daily to discern Our Lord’s presence? Do we feel His promptings within our hearts? Do we listen to Jesus when we pray? Should we have any difficulty, Mary the Mother of our Savior is our intercessor. Assumed into Heaven, body and soul, to become Queen of Heaven and Earth, Mary prays for us, drawing us to her Son for our eternal life.
Truly, in union with Our Lord, our joys, works, and sorrows all carry a greater purpose for the sake of redemption and salvation. Nothing we experience will be in vain. Therefore, let us raise our eyes toward Heaven. With our heart expanding, our vision lifted, we can rest in Our Lord’s peace that surpasses all understanding. To rise with Jesus is to welcome the fullness of life that awaits us in Christ’s presence for the splendor and glory of what is yet to be revealed. Amen!
