The mother of Catholic church shooter Robin Westman fled her Florida home just hours before FBI agents showed up looking for her.
Reports say Mary Grace Westman, 67, left her Naples condo on Wednesday to fly back to Minnesota. The FBI later arrived at the same location.
She was so shaken that she called a neighbor, worried she had left her patio door unlocked. The neighbor then phoned the Collier County Sheriff’s Office to check the property.
Photos published by the Daily Mail show her blue-gray Mini Cooper S left behind in the condo parking lot.
Mary retired in 2021 from working at Minneapolis’s Annunciation Catholic Church. That same church was where her “transgender” child opened fire, killing two young children and injuring 17 others.
She has since hired criminal defense attorney Ryan Garry, per the Conservative Brief.
Garry previously represented NFL star Colin Kaepernick in cases tied to protests following the death of George Floyd.
“She is completely distraught about the situation and has no culpability but is seeking an attorney to deal with calls like this,” Garry told Fox News.
Former employees of Annunciation Catholic School spoke out about Robin’s troubled past. One teacher said Mary struggled to accept Robin’s decision to identify as “transgender” about five years ago.
“She said, ‘I don’t know how I feel about this.’ I think she was struggling with her Catholic faith,” the teacher told NBC News.
The same employee described Robin, then known as Robert, as a lonely child without friends in the eighth grade.
Robin was often disruptive in class, leading to repeated meetings with the school principal. Mary appeared nervous in those meetings.
In a manifesto left online, Robin mentioned his mother repeatedly. “I feel like my mom would have seen it coming due to my rocky past with violent threats,” Robin wrote.
Mary had a history of political activism. She was previously photographed protesting abortion outside a Planned Parenthood clinic in St. Paul in 2005.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed Thursday that investigators had not been able to speak with her. “We have not been successful in talking to the shooter’s mother,” O’Hara said.
Robin used three legally obtained guns in the attack. Police said they do not know if the shooter had formal gun training.
Neighbors of the Westman family in Minneapolis said they were shocked by the tragedy. One neighbor told the New York Post his “jaw dropped” when he learned Robin was the shooter.
Robin’s father James, a former software employee at Esri, appeared devastated when police came to his home. A neighbor saw him sitting on the sidewalk with his head in his hands while his partner tried to console him.
Jim told investigators Robin had recently broken up with a significant partner and was staying with a friend.
The Westman family has not made any public comments since the attack.
