Vice President J.D. Vance told USA Today on Thursday that he is prepared to assume the presidency if something were to happen to President Donald Trump.
Speaking candidly about the possibility, Vance said, “Yes, things can always happen. Yes, terrible tragedies happen. And if, God forbid, there’s a terrible tragedy, I can’t think of better on-the-job training than what I’ve gotten over the last 200 days.”
Vance, who has served as vice president for just over six months, stressed that he has full confidence in Trump’s health and leadership.
“I feel very confident the president of the United States is in good shape, is gonna serve out the remainder of his term, and do great things for the American people,” he said.
Trump, 79, is the oldest person to hold the presidency, which has led to scrutiny of his health and stamina.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed concerns about bruising seen on the president’s hands, noting that the issue was attributed to “minor soft tissue irritation” from frequent handshaking and aspirin use, per the New York Post.
Presidential physician memos confirmed there were no signs of deep vein thrombosis, arterial disease, heart failure, or other systemic illness.
Trump was also recently diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a circulation issue, which has prompted additional monitoring.
Despite Trump’s age and health concerns, Vance painted a picture of a president with extraordinary energy and commitment.
“He’s got incredible energy, and while most of the people that work around the president of the United States are younger than he is, I think that we find that he actually is the last person who goes to sleep, he’s the last person making phone calls at night, and he’s the first person who wakes up and the first person making phone calls in the morning,” Vance said.
Vance’s comments come in the wake of two assassination attempts on President Trump, highlighting the unpredictable risks that come with the office.
The vice president, 37, is one of the youngest to serve in U.S. history, but he emphasized that his experience alongside Trump over the past 200 days has prepared him to lead if necessary.
In addition to discussing his readiness, Vance participated in a prayer vigil for victims of the recent mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
The vice president has made national security and public safety priorities central to his time in office, often highlighting the need for robust leadership and preparedness.
The remarks underscore a clear message from the White House: while Trump remains fully capable and actively engaged in his duties, Vance is positioning himself as a prepared and responsible vice president ready to respond to unforeseen circumstances.
Trump’s administration continues to face both domestic and international scrutiny, from policy challenges to ongoing questions about presidential health. Vance’s statement serves as reassurance to the public that continuity of leadership is in place, even in extreme scenarios.
For now, Vance maintains confidence in the president and reiterates his commitment to support Trump in completing his term. The White House has reiterated that Trump’s condition remains stable and that routine medical monitoring will continue, ensuring both transparency and readiness in the event of any emergencies.
