In what experts are calling a dangerous back-to-school mandate, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker (D) signed a new law ordering public colleges and universities to keep the abortion pill in stock.
The Land of Lincoln isn’t trailblazing where this policy is concerned. California, New York, and Massachusetts all already have similar laws in place. But Pritzker, upon signing House Bill 3709 into law, said he was “very proud” of forcing public academic institutions to provide — for free — the controversial abortion pill. “I made a promise to the women of Illinois,” he stated, “as governor, I will ensure your medical decisions will be your own. Now, we continue fulfilling that promise.” The law went into effect immediately.

If a college has a health center, they are required to have abortion drugs on hand. If the school does not have a health center, they’re mandated to prescribe abortion pills that students can get off campus or through telehealth. Reportedly, this policy was largely inspired by a push from pro-abortion activists. On the same day, Pritzker signed a separate bill that adds even more protections for abortion providers in the state.
According to a press release from Pritzker’s office, these bills are a direct response to the pro-life measures the Trump administration has taken in his second term, which Pritzker’s office described as an “anti-choice agenda.” Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton (D) also claimed that, “Since Roe fell, we’ve worked hard to ensure that Illinois is a safe haven for reproductive freedom in the Midwest and leading the country in strengthening women’s rights.” She added, “As Donald Trump and his administration continue to pull every lever they can to rip rights away from women, Illinois is making sure every woman, at every stage of life, can get the legal care they need from providers they trust.”
In the press release, Pritzker added that while he’s “proud to be taking these steps,” this is only the beginning. “… I will not rest on this. Because we know that anti-choice extremists won’t. We will continue to activate and protest and march and deliver until every woman in this state gets the health care she deserves.”
While Pritzker touts his actions, others are sounding the alarm. In fact, many have argued that these laws do more harm to women than good. Illinois Right to Life told WCIA News, “This bill places the health and safety of young women at risk and turns institutions of higher learning into abortion facilities.” Lawmakers have also spoken out against this legislation. “These bills work to promote and celebrate abortion rather than work to build up the services and support to help empower women through their pregnancy and even postpartum,” Rep. Reagan Deering (R-Ill.) emphasized. She further explained how Democrats in her state are more concerned with “their radical policies” rather than mothers who need help.
The firestorm has only grown since new research continues to warn of the dangers of mifepristone. In a recent study by the Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC), almost 11% of women who took the abortion drug were said to experience a “serious adverse event.” This study, EPPC President Ryan Anderson insisted, “is the statistical equivalent of a category 5 hurricane hitting the prevailing narrative of the abortion industry. It reveals, based on real-world data, the shocking number of women who suffer serious medical consequences because of the abortion pill.” Experts say that making the drug more available to college-age women puts them at serious risk.
Students for Life of America’s legislative arm, SFLAction, also slammed the law. SFLA President Kristan Hawkins said it’s “outrageous that the abortion radicals are forcing today’s students to subsidize ending the lives of the next generation. Pregnancy is not a disease cured by abortion.” She added, “This isn’t about health care. It’s about political payoffs to Planned Parenthood and abortion industry interests, sacrificing young women’s safety for an extremist agenda. Students shouldn’t have to pay for pills that kill.” The group added that this new law turns “college campuses into abortion distribution centers.”
Outside of these big names, public reaction on X has been equally heated. Commenting under Pritzker’s video he posted, one user wrote, “You push men into women’s spaces and advocate murder under the guise of ‘healthcare.’ You and your ideology are a plague to humanity.” Another commented, arguing that many on the Left seem to “think the only issue women care about is abortion.”
Other pro-life advocates exclusively told The College Fix that the legislation being pushed in Illinois is “insulting and infantilizing” to young women. Others stated it’s “outrageous” the state would force schools to expend resources so the “failing abortion giant” — Planned Parenthood — can “shore up their bottom line.”
In a comment to The Washington Stand, Tessa Longbons, senior research associate with the Charlotte Lozier Institute, reacted to the law. “As someone who grew up in Illinois,” she said, “I’m so sad to see this happening in my home state.” Longbons explained how “research shows that abortion drugs are dangerous — not just to unborn babies, but to their moms as well. The stories of women and unborn children harmed are growing every day.”
She further noted how “a recent study found that more than a third of women who used abortion drugs were unprepared for the level of pain and bleeding they encountered. Now these dangerous drugs will be readily accessible to young women who may be left to suffer alone in their dorm rooms.” Longbons concluded, “Women and their unborn babies deserve real help and support, not abortion drugs.”
