Delta Airlines recently announced that it will add anime programming to its in-flight options later this year, thanks to a new partnership with Crunchyroll, the Sony-owned subscription video on-demand streaming service specializing in Japanese animation. Knewz.com has learned that Delta’s deal with Crunchyroll marks the first time the carrier will feature anime as part of its onboard programming.
Delta Airlines signs partnership with Crunchyroll

Anime, a Japanese animation style recognized for its distinct storytelling and visuals, has grown into a global entertainment phenomenon. According to the announcement, Delta Airlines passengers will have access to a curated selection of shows, offering a mix of genres from action and adventure to romance and fantasy. Rahul Purini, President of Crunchyroll, emphasized the appeal of the medium for long-haul travelers. “There is nothing better on a long flight than immersing yourself in the rich storytelling and world-building of anime,” Purini said in a statement. “Fans can go deep on one series or sample one episode of many series – from action to adventure, romance and more. And when they get hooked they can continue their experience on the Crunchyroll app. We are excited to share what we love with Delta passengers and go to new heights together.”
Upgraded in-flight connectivity and entertainment

Delta executives have framed the Crunchyroll partnership as part of the airline’s broader strategy to upgrade in-flight connectivity and entertainment. Julieta McCurry, Delta’s Vice President of In-Flight Entertainment and Connectivity, described the deal as another step in aligning with customer demand. “At Delta, we see every flight as an opportunity for discovery. … Whether you’re diving into the anime genre for the first time or continuing a favorite series, bringing Crunchyroll to Delta gives our customers access to a world of storytelling while onboard and beyond,” McCurry said. “It’s part of Delta’s commitment to delivering industry-leading entertainment that reflects the passions and interests of our customers,” she added.
Delta unveils exclusive perks for SkyMiles members

In addition to onboard access, the partnership with Crunchyroll includes a special offer for Delta’s frequent fliers. SkyMiles members will receive a complimentary 24-hour trial of Crunchyroll that can be used during the flight or after arriving at their destination. The offer is designed to let travelers continue watching the content they discovered in the air once they are back on the ground. This perk highlights the growing trend of airlines partnering with streaming services to extend entertainment beyond the flight itself.
United Airlines also expands in-flight entertainment

United Airlines recently announced that full seasons of select Apple TV+ shows — including Severance, Shrinking, Ted Lasso and Slow Horses — will be available for free across its in-flight entertainment platforms. The rollout covers the 130,000 seatback screens already in service as well as the United app, with more expansion planned. “Apple creates groundbreaking original series, and United travelers are going to love watching fan-favorite Apple Originals for free on their next flight,” said Mark Muren, United’s Managing Director of Product, Identity and Loyalty. “We’re setting a new standard for a premium inflight experience, and our first-of-its-kind collaboration with Apple TV+ gives fliers more high-quality content options on the latest high-definition seatback screens.”
