China will host a slew of America’s adversaries during a massive military parade marking the end of World War II on Sept. 2, Reuters reported Thursday.
Chinese President Xi Jinping will stand alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin, North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, and leaders from Iran and Myanmar at the spectacle, according to Reuters. The parade will mark the first time Putin and Un will appear publicly alongside the Chinese president, sending a powerful message signifying a mutual cooperation in the so-called “Axis of Upheaval” against Western powers.
“When Xi was just a regional leader, he looked up to Putin, and saw the kind of leader he could learn from – and now he is a global leader,” Alfred Wu, associate professor at the National University of Singapore, told Reuters. “Having Kim alongside him, as well, highlights how Xi is now also a global leader.”
The only Western-aligned nations represented will be Slovakia and Serbia, whose leaders have harbored sympathetic attitudes toward Russia and Putin, according to Reuters.
Many of the nations in attendance, such as Russia, North Korea and Iran, have been under heavy Western sanctions for the better part of a decade. As a result, they increasingly see one another as natural allies, with many of them formalizing ties with China in the BRICS economic partnership.
China has been adamant that its partnership with Russia has “no limits,” and that Beijing stands ready to assist Moscow. North Korea has already sent troops to the war in Ukraine on Russia’s side, while China remains a key economic partner to support Russia’s war effort.
Iran is one of China’s most prolific oil suppliers, as Beijing receives up to 90% of Iran’s oil exports, while also buying oil and gas from Russia.
The State Department did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
