Vice President J.D. Vance may have called Elon Musk‘s feud with President Donald Trump a “mistake,” but he’s not giving up hope the tech mogul will eventually come back to Washington, D.C.
Hopes for reconciliation

Vance told The Gateway Pundit he hopes Musk will be back by the 2026 midterms. He also praised the billionaire’s role in Trump’s 2024 campaign. “I don’t know that he would take my call right now,” Vance quipped, noting Musk’s “complicated relationship” with the White House. “I kid,” he added. “I’m sure he would take my call, but honestly, the drama around him and the White House over the last couple of months … my hope is that it just kinda cools down a bit.”
Politics

Vance downplayed the internal disagreements, framing loyalty to Trump as the bigger priority. “If you’re patriotic, you’re not trying to sink your knife in the back of the president, you’re not trying to betray the movement, I don’t care about these, like, minor, little disagreements,” he said, adding that he is “pretty big tent about this stuff.”
Musk in the middle

According to Vance, Musk is politically stranded — not welcome on the left and at odds with Trump. “My argument to Elon is like, you’re not going to be on the left … even if you wanted to be — and he doesn’t — they’re not going to have you back, that ship has sailed,” he said. “I really think it’s a mistake for him to try to break from the president. … My hope is, by the midterms, things are kind of back to normal.”
Fallout with Trump

Musk was formally dismissed by the Trump administration in late May. At the time, Trump appeared unfazed, saying Musk “will always be with us, helping all the way.” However, tensions quickly escalated after Musk attacked Trump’s One Big, Beautiful Bill, particularly slamming its cost and calling it a “disgusting abomination.” Despite Musk’s efforts, the bill passed and was signed into law on July 4. Musk later announced plans to launch a centrist “America Party,” labeling it as an alternative to the GOP and the Democrats. Trump dismissed the move as “ridiculous,” writing on Truth Social at the time, “I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks.”
