Texas authorities announced Thursday they had arrested a second person in connection with the death of a 8-year-old child earlier this year.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said that Kara Walker, 17, was charged with injury to a child with serious bodily injury. Her boyfriend, 18-year-old Nolan Stallings, was arrested on the same charge in March.
The 8-year-old victim was Walker’s brother.
Court documents from Stallings’ case say the boy was brought to a hospital in Baytown on February 10 in critical condition with multiple injuries, KHOU reported. The boy died not long after he was brought to the hospital.
Investigators said Stallings told them the boy “fell down a lot,” but detectives determined that the child was “abused and tortured over several days.”
Gonzalez said at the time that the boy’s injuries were consistent with abuse, and the Houston Chronicle said that charging documents said the boy was beaten with a blunt object.
Stallings was arrested on March 3.
According to jail records, Walker is being held on a $100,000 bond and has a September 2 court date. Stallings is no longer listed in jail records, although KRIV said he had a $1 million bond.
Neither the victim’s sister nor the boyfriend have been charged directly with the boy’s death.
