The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is investigating potential links between psychiatric drugs taken during “gender transitions” and violence, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), said Aug. 28.
Kennedy made the comments on “Fox & Friends” after host Brian Kilmeade asked if it was possible that such drugs had “a role” in the violence Robert “Robin” Westman perpetrated during a Mass on Aug. 27, when he killed two schoolchildren and left 17 other people wounded. Kilmeade noted that the March 2023 Covenant School shooting was also perpetrated by an attacker who identified as “transgender.”
“We are doing those kind of studies now at NIH,” Kennedy replied. “We’re launching studies on the potential contribution of some of the SSRI drugs and some of the other psychiatric drugs that might be contributing to violence. Many of them have black box warnings that warn of suicidal ideation and homicidal ideation.”
Some of these drugs’ warnings stem from clinical trials where researchers observed suicidal and homicidal ideation, Kennedy explained.
SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are a class of antidepressants. According to KATV, an ABC affiliate, some brand name labels in this drug class “list on their labels that it can actually increase the risk of suicidal thoughts on those 24 years or younger.”
Kennedy added in the interview, “A lot of these studies have not been done in the past because of HIPAA regulations, to protect the privacy of patients. But it is something right now that we’re looking at.”
But, according to Kennedy, these studies are essential.
“We need to explain why all this violence is happening and we need to look at every possibility,” he said.
He later commented that “this kind of violence is very recent, it’s a new thing in human history. There’s no time in the past when people would walk into a church or a classroom and start shooting people.”
“It’s not really happening in other countries,” he added. “It’s happening here and we need to look at all of the potential culprits that might be contributing to that.”
According to the New York Post, before the shooting Westman posted to YouTube about his journal writings, which allegedly included the statement “I am tired of being trans, I wish I never brain-washed myself.”
Westman later wrote, “I just wish I was a girl I just know I cannot achieve that body with the technology we have today. I also can’t afford that.”
According to court documents, Westman applied to change his name from Robert to Robin when he was 17, the New York Post reported. The outlet added that the court petition states that Westman “identifies as female and wants her name to reflect that identification.”
