An elderly Jewish woman in her 70s, wearing visible Jewish symbols, was stabbed in broad daylight while shopping at the Baseline Kosher Loblaws in Ottawa’s west end. The Jewish Federation of Ottawa confirmed the victim is “a cherished member of our community.” She was rushed to hospital in critical condition, but has since been released and is recovering.
Police arrested a 71-year-old man at the scene and charged him with aggravated assault and possession of a dangerous weapon. Investigators confirmed the suspect and victim were complete strangers, and the Ottawa Police Service Hate and Bias Crime Unit is assisting with the case. The suspect appeared in court on Thursday — yet notably, police have not disclosed his name.
“The Ottawa Police Service is looking at all potential motives behind this unprovoked assault,” police said in a statement — carefully avoiding any acknowledgement of the obvious: a Jew stabbed inside a kosher section of the market. The Jewish Federation says it is treating this as a possible hate crime and is in close contact with the Chief of Police, the Mayor’s office, CIJA, and national Jewish security officials.
The omission of the “kosher” detail by mainstream Canadian outlets is telling. If this had been a Muslim stabbed in a halal market, the word “halal” would lead every headline, and politicians across Canada would be tripping over themselves to denounce “Islamophobia.” Instead, once again, attacks on Jews are softened with euphemisms like “unprovoked assault,” and the suspect’s identity is withheld.
The Federation stated that it is working to strengthen community security infrastructure in collaboration with the Ottawa Police and city services, and is also pressing Loblaws to enhance safety for Jewish shoppers.
This latest attack highlights an uncomfortable truth: under Justin Trudeau, Canada has become increasingly hostile to Jews. Synagogues, kosher establishments, and visibly Jewish citizens face ongoing threats and violence, while the government’s response remains tepid. The double standard is undeniable – when Jews are attacked, the story is buried and minimized.
RAIF Foundation USA has reached out to the Ottawa Police Service Media Relations Office for comment on why the suspect’s identity has not been disclosed and whether this incident is officially being investigated as a hate-motivated crime. This report will be updated when a response is received.
