Last Thursday, bill A 5958 was introduced to the New Jersey General Assembly.
This bill would exempt elected officials (from U.S. Congress members to any state/local offices filled by election) and their chiefs of staff from N.J.S.2C:39-5, New Jersey’s ‘unlawful possession of a weapon statute.’
Under this bill elected officials and their chiefs of staff would be allowed to carry handguns without a permit, possess rifles and shotguns without a Firearms Purchaser ID, and transport these firearms without fear of persecution, all of which would be illegal for you to do as a New Jersey resident.
You read that right.
Legislators and select government staff in New Jersey will be granted their full Constitutional rights to carry and purchase a firearm WHILE “normal” folks are still subjected to the immense gun control laws of New Jersey.
At the end of the day, you have to walk the same streets as your elected officials, and if they feel the need for exemptions in the name of safety, why should you, their constituents, have to jump through hoops just for access the same right they’re planning on giving themselves?
A 5958 is a giant slap in the face to all law-abiding citizens in New Jersey.
A 5958 furthers to advance a two-tiered system that criminalizes the regular citizens of New Jersey. Send a message to your legislator using the form above telling them to Amend A 5958 by expanding these rights and exemptions to ALL New Jersey residents!
