Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman (D) shocked Democrats Friday by publicly siding with President Donald Trump on the trade war, saying the tariffs are “going well” and admitting his party “got it wrong.”
When asked by Fox News Digital whether Trump was winning the trade war, Fetterman replied, “Absolutely.”
“I’m a huge fan of Bill Maher,” Fetterman said, “and he thought tariffs would tank the economy. He admitted they didn’t. So for me, it seems like the E.U. thing has been going well, and I guess we’ll see how it happens with China.”
Fetterman’s comments came as Trump raised tariffs on Canadian imports from 25% to 35% after Canada failed to curb the flow of fentanyl and other illicit drugs. Trump also signed an executive order modifying tariff rates on other countries to address trade deficits.
The White House said the tariffs are part of an effort to secure “fair, balanced and reciprocal trade relationships.”
Since the April 9 tariff hike, the Trump administration has secured multiple new trade deals.
The European Union agreed to purchase $750 billion in U.S. energy and invest $600 billion by 2028. The EU also accepted a 15% baseline tariff, per the New York Post.
Japan struck a similar deal, agreeing to invest $550 billion into U.S. industry and open its markets to more American exports. Like the EU, Japan accepted a 15% tariff rate.
Still, top Democrats continue to predict economic fallout.
Sen. Jack Reed warned Americans will “start seeing significant increases in most things you buy” and warned of potential disruptions to supply chains.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen added, “This is the president who said he was going to come in and reduce prices. Prices are going to rise, and they’re going to rise more over time.”
Sen. Elizabeth Warren accused Trump of scaring off trade partners, calling the U.S. “not a reliable trading partner.” She also blamed Trump’s tariffs for the Federal Reserve’s refusal to cut interest rates.
“Jerome Powell said he would have lowered rates in February if it hadn’t been for the chaos that Donald Trump was creating over trade,” Warren said.
Despite the backlash, Republicans say Trump’s moves are working.
Sen. Ted Cruz said, “I think it’s exactly the right approach… I think the successes he’s winning are big wins for America.” When asked about Democrats predicting failure, Cruz replied, “I’m shocked, shocked that Democrats are rooting for the economy to do badly under President Trump.”
Cruz slammed Democrats for putting “partisan hatred for Trump” ahead of working for “American workers and American jobs.”
Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) agreed that the tariffs worked but said he ultimately wants to see zero tariffs on both sides.
“Clearly, the president got a good deal. The Europeans just caved,” Kennedy said. “Fifteen percent tariffs on them, zero on us, commitment to invest in our country. But the part of the deal I like the most—goods would be tariff-free. It’s called reciprocity.”
“Let the free enterprise system work,” Kennedy said. “May the best product at the best price win.”
