After an intense period of formation, cyclists this July completed a 600-mile, cross-country journey for the nonprofit Biking for Babies’ 16th annual National Ride to raise money and awareness for crisis pregnancy centers.
“Cycling is an adventurous hook and a means for prayer, growth in virtue, public witness, and fundraising,” says Biking for Babies’ webpage about the ride.
This year’s July 14-19 National Ride was just one part of a lengthy period of formation and growth for the 83 cyclists. Biking for Babies, a Catholic nonprofit, works to form participants intellectually, physically, and spiritually in the Gospel of Life before they complete the ride.
The central piece of this period of formation is community, which is built through small groups.
“It is in this community that these young adults are encouraged, challenged and prompted to transform their own lives, turning completely toward Christ and living out the Gospel of Life,” according to the organization’s webpage.
The physical component of the formation is intense. The National Ride itself is six days long, and cyclists travel about 100 miles each day.
“I went from almost no cycling at all earlier in the winter to then biking 100 miles a day in the spring just a few weeks later,” 2025 participant Tim Minor told On Mission.
Each year, the precise routes change. This year, each cyclist traversed one of nine routes, which converge with finish lines in St. Louis, Missouri, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In both St. Louis and Philadelphia, there were “Celebration of Life” events with dinner, prayer, and speakers, according to Biking for Babies’ webpage about the events.
A participating cyclist’s experience doesn’t end with the finish line, though. Each commits to intentional discipleship and sharing the Gospel of Life.
“Missionary discipleship is a life-long journey which missionaries are challenged and equipped to stick with even after their time within this program,” the National Ride page says.
“In Biking for Babies, I join myself to a higher effort to renew and propagate the culture of life where we all respect the dignity of human life, especially vulnerable, unborn life,” Minor said, according to On Mission.
