Hey y’all, welcome back to Unfit to Print.
Today I am going full misogynist because I am so disgusted by what I’ve been seeing in Cincinnati. Buckle up.
TIME TO BAN GIRL COPS?
By now you’ve seen the video.
An all-black mob in Cincinnati gangs up on a lone white guy, repeatedly stomping his head. You know what that’s called? Attempted murder. When a white woman steps in to stop the assault, she’s knocked out. Onlookers cheer and record the violence. Police are nowhere to be found.
My friend Geoff wrote earlier this week in State of the Day about how he would handle — and how any sane person would handle — these acts of malicious and wanton violence.
My focus today is on the actual response from local leadership. Specifically, the female police chief who briefed the public on the incident.
Cincinnati Police Department Chief Teresa Theetge, during a Monday press conference, deflected blame and had the gall to chastise the public for sharing video of the attack. Theetge accused “mainstream” journalists of misrepresenting what happened — what we saw with our own eyes on VIDEO — and making it “more difficult” for police to do their job.
“Social media, the posts that we’ve seen, does not depict the entire incident. That is one version of what occurred,” she said. “I think the irresponsibility with social media is that it just shows one side of the equation quite frequently, without context, without factual context and then people run with that, and then it grows legs and it becomes something bigger that we then have to try to manage as part of the investigation.”
According to the chief’s other statements, there were 100 people there and just ONE called the police. If this video weren’t shared widely across social media, would Theetge’s department even be taking this seriously? Would the numerous witnesses try to protect their friends who nearly killed this guy? A ‘thank you’ is more appropriate here than a scolding.
Let’s also talk about the supposed “context” that justified chasing a man into the street, body-slamming him, and jumping on his head. Apparently the white guy was having words with one of the other men present and slapped him on the cheek. The white guy was sucker-punched from behind and that’s when the mob took over. A silly, possibly drunken altercation turned into an animalistic ritual beating. Context.
More information was dug up about Theetge after her idiotic comments. This girl cop (phrase shamelessly ripped from Ann Coulter) is being sued by members of her department for sex and race discrimination in hiring and promotion.
“The city and Chief Theetge have actively and systemically undertaken efforts to promote, advance, and make promotion and assignment decisions that are preferable to women and minorities, and to the exclusion of White men,” the lawsuit claims.
Hmm, can’t imagine why she was so quick to excuse the mob.
I tweeted earlier this week, “I am honestly over female cops” in response to Theetge’s presser. I am being somewhat tongue-in-cheek. Some girl cops, I assume, are good people. But when just 3% of police chiefs in the country are female and we have one of the most prominent examples spouting off pure nonsense in public and allegedly engaging in shameless affirmative action, it doesn’t present well for the gender.
One study found that female cops are more likely to perceive danger in the community and are more suspicious of citizens. Another found that female cops are more likely to be assaulted in family conflict situations. A third found that women are not at greater risk of being injured overall than male cops but are less likely to use deadly force. Finally, female cops are less likely to arrest someone for an arrestable offense when not observed by a supervisor.
The data suggests to me that female cops deliberately avoid situations that could escalate to having to use force. Police reformists would probably tell you that’s a good thing and describe their actions as “deescalatory.” If we’re looking at this from a public safety perspective … I wouldn’t describe the trend positively.
