Britain’s population is booming at record speed—driven almost entirely by mass migration. New figures from the Office for National Statistics show England and Wales grew by more than 700,000 people last year alone, marking the second biggest annual rise since records began in 1949. The scale and speed of change are fuelling warnings of a demographic tipping point.
The population of the two nations hit 61.8 million by June 2024, up from 61.1 million. Only a jump of 821,000, recorded in June 2023, shows larger growth.
Nigel Henretty for the ONS said
Net international migration continues to be the main driver of this growth, continuing the long-term trend seen since the turn of the century.
The figure applies to legal migration only, not ‘small boat crossings.’ Opposition parties blasted the government, emphasising ‘quality of life’ issues, including the pressure that the numbers place on housing and public services. One key problem is that visas are being handed out linked to unskilled occupations.
Back in January this year, academic and pundit Matt Goodwin outlined how the emerging demographic numbers amounted to “Shocking new data on how the country is about to be radically transformed.”
Now, Goodwin’s predictions appear to have been correct.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage called the figures
disastrous for the quality of life for everyone in the country. It puts impossible pressures on public services and further divides our communities.
