President Donald Trump recently escalated his feud with tech billionaire Elon Musk, going so far as to suggest that the government could review his citizenship status and potentially deport him to his home country of South Africa. Knewz.com has learned that the threat came amid Musk’s latest round of criticism against the Trump administration’s sweeping new tax and budget legislation, dubbed the One Big, Beautiful Bill.
Trump threatens to sic DOGE on Musk

In a post on his Truth Social platform, President Trump threatened to have the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) take a “good, hard, look” at the billions in contracts that Musk’s companies receive. “Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa. No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE. Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!” the president wrote. Musk fired back within an hour on X, stating simply, “I am literally saying CUT IT ALL. Now.” When reporters asked the president whether he indeed intends to deport Musk, he replied, “We’ll have to take a look. … We might have to put DOGE on Elon. You know what DOGE is? DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon. Wouldn’t that be terrible? He gets a lot of subsidies.”
Musk’s opposition of Trump’s flagship spending bill

The spat between Trump and his former “First Buddy” was sparked by Musk’s criticism of what the president calls the One Big, Beautiful Bill, which is a sweeping tax and budget proposal criticized by fiscal conservatives for its long-term projections. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO), a nonpartisan group that analyzes government spending, warned that Trump’s flagship spending bill would add $3.8 trillion to the federal government’s $36.2 trillion in debt. Musk previously called the comprehensive legislative package a “disgusting abomination” on social media. “I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. … This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination,” the Tesla CEO wrote on X. “Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it,” he wrote. Musk also shared a graphic depicting rising national debt over the past three decades, writing, “Mammoth spending bills are bankrupting America! ENOUGH.”
Trump says Musk opposes bill over EV tax credit cuts

President Trump has claimed that the Tesla CEO only opposes the spending bill because the legislation would end a program under former President Joe Biden that offers consumer tax credit for buyers of electric vehicles. The bill proposes phasing out Joe Biden-era EV tax credits (up to $7,500 for new cars and $4,000 for used ones), which could negatively affect Tesla’s consumer sales and profit margins. Trump wrote in a Truth Social post, “Elon Musk knew, long before he so strongly Endorsed me for President, that I was strongly against the EV Mandate. It is ridiculous, and was always a major part of my campaign. Electric cars are fine, but not everyone should be forced to own one.” He later told reporters, “Elon is very upset that the EV mandate is going to be terminated.”
Musk floats supporting a new political party

Amid intensifying criticism of the Trump administration over the new spending bill, Musk has also floated the idea of supporting a different party. “It is obvious with the insane spending of this bill, which increases the debt ceiling by a record FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS that we live in a one-party country – the PORKY PIG PARTY!! Time for a new political party that actually cares about the people,” he wrote on X.
