A young communist Democratic Socialist of America member from Massachusetts named Calla Walsh recently returned from a US-bashing trip where she declared “Death to America!” and was unsurprisingly detained by Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
An elitist communist is detained
This incensed the radical founder of the pro-Hamas group Unity of Fields, who whined about being stopped Wednesday at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. She proceeded to refer to ICE as the Gestapo, which was sending immigrants to concentration camps on X.
“A Gestapo agent was waiting at the gate for me in JFK as soon as I stepped off…I got detained/questioned by CBP for a few hours, nothing that I didn’t expect. I had no phone for them to seize. Overheard Gestapo sending migrants to ICE concentration camps. Warm welcome home,” she wrote.
Death to America! Death to Israel!
Walsh had attended an Iranian state-backed event with her fellow travelers that the media there described as a “festival organized by Iran’s U.S.-sanctioned [state] broadcaster.” The leftist claims she was unsurprised that she was detained following her speech to Iranians, where she declared “Death to America!” “Death to Israel!” to loud, roaring applause. She, of course, covered her hair.
“Glory to all the martyrs. Glory to the Axis of Resistance,” Walsh declared, using a common name for the alliance between Iran and terrorist groups. “May we see victory in our lifetimes.”
She seems to have a special place in her dark heart for Iran. Right next to her hatred of America and Israel.
“For the safety and security of the American people, all individuals, including U.S. Citizens, are subject to inspection by U.S. Customs and Border Protection upon entry into the United States to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations,” the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) told the DCNF.

Unity of Fields reportedly supported anti-Israel protests at Columbia University that led to arrests, and the group has a history of explicitly calling for violence against police officers, supporters of Israel, and others deemed oppressive. The FBI reportedly launched a probe into Unity of Fields in May 2024 following a vandalism attack on a defense technology firm in New Hampshire, NHJournal reported. Walsh was involved in the incident and was sentenced in local court to 60 days in prison in November.
Before she was sentenced to prison, Walsh’s last words were, “Free Palestine!”
This is allegedly not the first time Walsh has been detained by the CBP. She was also held in May after visiting “revolutionary Cuba.”
“All of this indicates to me that I am on some sort of domestic terrorism watch list, as a result of my anti-imperialist political activity and my criminal record for taking direct action to resist the amerikan-zionist genocide against Palestine,” she wrote on X.
Communist Connections
The woman is a dyed-in-the-kufiyah communist who is the co-chair of the National Network on Cuba. Her father is Chris Walsh, the director of Boston University’s college writing program. She is also a member of the Young Communist League and is a “supporter” of the Socialist Friends of China.

Iran hearts Walsh
The Iranians refer to Walsh as a journalist, which is an immense stretch to say the least. She is a communist activist whose enemy of her enemy is her friend.

The four-day event, held from July 17 to 21 under the slogan “Condemnation of Terrorism Against Media,” is hosted by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), whose headquarters was bombed by Israel during its military assault on Iran.
American journalists and activists including Calla Walsh and Jennifer Koonings appear in videos and photos shared on the festival’s official X account, in which they voice support for Iran and criticize US foreign policy.
“Living in the United States, we’re constantly fed negative propaganda about places like Iran, portraying them as evil. But it’s so ridiculous that if you have two functioning brain cells, you know none of it is true,” said New York-based journalist Koonings, speaking in front of an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) drone.
“The US empire is the most criminal and evil entity on the planet,” she added.
Walsh loves the murderous mullahs
“It is the greatest honor of my life to be visiting the Islamic Republic of Iran right now, at this moment, while it is under genocidal siege by the United States and the Zionist entity,” said Walsh, standing at the IRGC aerospace expo, with missiles in the background. How apropos.

“I see how resilient how unified the Iranian people are how powerful the sense of solidarity of steadfastness is and you know being surrounded by the indigenous military capacities the production Iran has achieved despite being under siege despite being under sanctions,” Walsh told IRNA.
“Clearly the Zionist entity and the US entity are lying about how much impact these attacks have had,” she added, referring to President Trump bombing Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Other festival participants included activists, filmmakers, and journalists from the UK, Spain, Germany, Canada, Venezuela, and Brazil.

Iran continues to be ranked among the world’s worst countries for press freedom.
According to Reporters Without Borders, “Iran has reinforced its position as one of the most repressive countries in terms of press freedom, with journalists and independent media constantly persecuted through arbitrary arrests and harsh sentences handed down after unfair trials before revolutionary courts.”
In June, the IRGC detained the family member of an Iran International anchor in Tehran to pressure the journalist to stop working with the network, in a move condemned by the network.
Two female journalists who covered the 2022 death of a young woman named Mahsa Amini in morality police custody spent 17 months in prison.
Amini’s death sparked widespread protests across Iran and drew international condemnation. The unrest and media coverage of them were violently quashed.
The rise of a young communist
Walsh began her radical climb in politics, campaigning with Sens. Ed Markey and Liz Warren as part of a young progressive group called the “Markeyverse.” She was hailed by The Boston Globe as a bright light in the Massachusetts Democratic Party, according to the New Hampshire Journal.

Walsh’s participation in the Tehran event marks a striking turn from her previous appearances in U.S. media as a voice of progressive activism backing liberals like Warren and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu. Teen Vogue published an essay by Walsh in 2021 urging her fellow Gen Zers to embrace Democratic Socialism.
“For my generation, a fascist presidential administration, pandemic, economic collapse, and a historic uprising for Black lives have shaped our worldview,” Walsh wrote at the time. “These defining events and movements have caused Gen Z to become more disillusioned with capitalism and the white-supremacist, bourgeois state than older generations.”
Walsh went to Iran as part of a delegation organized by the World Service of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, a government-run media operation that spreads propaganda and justifies Tehran’s controversial policies.
Nadwa Al-Dawsari, a fellow at the Middle East Institute, slammed Walsh’s trek to Iran, “Calla Walsh in Tehran chanting ‘Death to America’ while Iran and its proxies kill, displace, and brutalize millions, especially women. Nothing says ‘justice’ like cheering on a theocracy from a place of privilege.”
