At least five people are dead, including a New York City police officer, and others are wounded after being shot inside a Manhattan office building Monday evening, July 28. Two sources close to the investigation identified the suspect as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas. Tamura’s motive is unknown.
At least six people were shot, according to law enforcement sources who spoke to Fox News. Photos obtained by the New York Post show the shooter used a Palmetto State Armory AR-15.
“At this time, the scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch wrote in a post on X.
Gunman entered with rifle, moved through building
Surveillance photos, provided by law enforcement, show a man carrying what appeared to be a semiautomatic rifle entering the building located at 345 Park Avenue, blocks from Grand Central Station and the Museum of Modern Art.
The gunman opened fire in the lobby, shot more people on another floor, and eventually died by suicide on the 33rd floor, Fox News reports.
Emergency services were alerted to the shooting around 6:30 p.m., triggering a large-scale emergency response. The building includes offices of Blackstone, Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan and the Consulate General of Ireland, CNN reported.
According to law enforcement who spoke with CNN, Tamura had a concealed carry license for a handgun.
FBI joins NYPD in response
The FBI also responded to the shooting, as confirmed by the agency’s deputy director, Dan Bongino. “The FBI is on scene at the Manhattan crime scene. The NYPD currently has the lead in this investigation,” Bongino wrote in a post on X. “Our personnel are there to support their efforts. Motive is currently under investigation.”
Bongino said agents were responding to support an “active crime scene.”
New York City Mayor Eric Adams posted on social media that he was on the scene of an active shooter event in Midtown and that the shooter had been “neutralized.” He urged people who work in the building to shelter in place as law enforcement searched the building.
