A cruise ship crew member stabbed another crew member Thursday night then leapt overboard near the Bahamas.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force said the incident took place in the waters off San Salvador Island on the Royal Caribbean ship Icon of the Seas, WTVJ reported.
Police said the suspect, a 35-year-old man, stabbed a 28-year-old woman multiple times. Both were from South Africa.
The man fled and jumped overboard. Rescuers later found him unresponsive and brought him back onboard, where he was pronounced dead by medical staff.
The woman was stabbed multiple times in the upper body and was said to be in stable condition.
“Our onboard security team responded to an incident involving two crew members in a personal dispute. One of the crew members was injured, was attended to by the onboard medical team, and she is now in stable condition,” Royal Caribbean said in a statement. “Unfortunately, the other crew member is deceased after he went overboard and was recovered in a search and rescue operation.”
The ship was on its way from Miami to the Bahamas when the incident took place. It is expected back in Miami on Saturday.
