The Department of Justice (DOJ) is attempting to obtain additional information from Ghislaine Maxwell as the chaos centering around the Jeffrey Epstein controversy reaches a fever pitch.
The conversation surrounding the late billionaire and Maxwell heated up once again after the DOJ released a memo saying that the highly anticipated Epstein client list doesn’t exist, as Breitbart News reported.
Republicans and Democrats have even joined forces to attempt to push the agency to release documents about probes of Epstein.
According to recent reports, however, the DOJ is taking another tack and is now reaching out to Maxwell’s attorney to request additional testimony from the incarcerated woman herself.
Epstein backlash grows
Trump has been suffering intense backlash from even some of his staunchest supporters around the country and on Capitol Hill, with some asserting that there could be a nefarious reason a client list or other Epstein-related materials will not be released.
The president himself commented on the issue recently, saying, “I don’t really follow that too much. It’s sort of a witch hunt… a continuation of the witch hunt.”
The DOJ has said that the president asked them to release any “credible evidence” related the case, and to many lawmakers, that represents an open door.
Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) wants more from the Justice Department, saying, “Do what the president asked. Release those records. I think that’s a great start.”
Johnson weighs in
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has attempted to keep the lower chamber out of the drama, saying, “There’s no purpose for Congress to push an administration to do something they’re already doing… This is for political games.”
However, some believe that Johnson is helping cover for those in power who don’t want the documents released.
A number of people have questioned why Congress is headed home early for an August recess in the midst of all this turmoil, and at least one Democrat has a theory.
“They’re ending this week early because they’re afraid to cast votes on the Epstein issue,” Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) said.
Lieu’s comments on the matter surely echo the sentiments of more than a few others on Capitol Hill and around the country.
