We are seeing more protests taking place around the world, and yet another one has popped up in Bangladesh after a horrible tragedy.
A Bangladesh Air Force jet crashed amid training exercises, killing 31 people.
Sadly, most of them were children.
Time for change
During the training session, the jet crashed into a Dhaka school, with 25 of the 31 people killed since identified as children.
From there, protests erupted to the point that police had to use tear gas to get the crowd to disperse.
The local community was outraged over the accident, as most of the children who were killed were under the age of 12.
The jet hit the school and immediately burst into flames, trapping the children amid the fire and debris from the crash.
According to the Air Force, the jet suffered a mechanical failure.
The accident happened not long after takeoff. After experiencing the failure, the pilot attempted to get the aircraft to an unpopulated area, but he clearly fell short of his goal. The pilot did so at his own peril, and he was among those included in the death toll.
In addition to the nearly three dozen dead, 165 people were injured, with more than five dozen remaining hospitalized, so the death toll may still increase.
Students from the affected school, as well as neighboring schools, showed up to protest at the crash site, screaming, “Why did our brothers die? We demand answers!”
Other protests popped up at government buildings, demanding the resignation of the education adviser.
The father of one of the children killed stated, “I took her to school yesterday morning like every day. I had no idea it would be the last time I would be seeing her.”
The mother of a child whose shirt caught fire but who still managed to escape explained, “He sprinted to the ground floor and jumped on the grass to douse it. He tore his shirt and vest inside, which saved him from severe burns.”
This has all just added to the turmoil that has gripped the country since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced to flee in August 2024.
The interim government has vowed to hold new elections next year.
