Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., cited “escalating legal and regulatory risks” in announcing an end to its gender transition medical procedures.
The hospital’s “Gender Development Program” website page shared the news on the changes that will go into effect on August 30, 2025.
“In light of escalating legal and regulatory risks to Children’s National, our providers, and the families we serve, we will be discontinuing the prescription of gender-affirming medications,” the hospital announced.
“Mental health and other support services for LGBT patients remain available. You are always welcome at Children’s National for your other medical needs,” the message continued. “We know this change will have a significant impact on affected patients, families and staff. Our care teams are working directly with families of current patients to support them.”
The announcement comes as the Justice Department launched an investigation into transgender medical interventions on children.
Federal agencies were directed by President Donald Trump’s “Protecting Children From Chemical and Surgical Mutilation” executive order in January to cut federal funding from providers who offered “gender‑affirming care” to patients under the age of 19.
“Across the country today, medical professionals are maiming and sterilizing a growing number of impressionable children under the radical and false claim that adults can change a child’s sex through a series of irreversible medical interventions. This dangerous trend will be a stain on our Nation’s history, and it must end,” the order read.
It continued, saying the U.S. “will not fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support the so-called ‘transition’ of a child from one sex to another, and it will rigorously enforce all laws that prohibit or limit these destructive and life-altering procedures.”
While Children’s National Hospital reportedly paused prescriptions, refills and medication, they picked up again after a federal judge issued a nationwide temporary restraining order.
Nearly 20 doctors and facilities providing gender-transition procedures were hit with subpoenas from the Justice Department this month, though a spokeswoman for Children’s National did not confirm that the hospital received a subpoena, according to The Washington Post.
The Gender Development Program at Children’s National is described as “one of the earliest founded youth gender programs” on its website, noting that they “work with gender exploring, gender non-conforming, gender dysphoric, gender non-binary, transgender and gender-questioning young people, and we see children and adolescents of all ages.”
