The Hungarian Defence Forces have received the final two Airbus H225M helicopters, completing a 16-aircraft fleet that significantly enhances the country’s military mobility, operational flexibility, and international integration. The milestone was announced on Tuesday at the base of the 86th Helicopter Brigade in Szolnok by Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky.
‘This is no longer a promise of the future; this is the reality of today,’ the minister said, noting that the arrival of the final helicopters marks a decisive moment in Hungary’s defence modernization programme.
The minister emphasized that the fleet is more than just a group of reliable, modern helicopters. It represents a complex system that will transform the Defence Forces’ responsiveness, mobility, and ability to participate in international operations. He added that this development is part of a broader overhaul across the military’s entire arsenal—not just the air force.
The completed H225M fleet includes ten medium tactical transport helicopters and six special operations aircraft. The latter are equipped with the HForce weapons system, developed specifically for the Hungarian Air Force. The final two of these combat-ready helicopters have now arrived.
These aircraft provide a significant upgrade in capability. The transport helicopters are designed for moving troops, equipment, and supplies quickly and securely. They can also perform external cargo lifting and firefighting operations—even under night-time conditions with night-vision support. The six special operations helicopters are equipped with a 20mm cannon, 70mm rocket pods, and will soon be fitted with guided anti-tank missiles. Additional advanced features include complex navigation systems, winches, rapid rope insertion capabilities, and modular cargo equipment.
Szalay-Bobrovniczky highlighted recent examples of the fleet’s successful use, such as Hungary’s assistance in containing wildfires in North Macedonia last August and in Vas County last September. ‘The technology matters, but the people operating it are even more important,’ he said, stressing the importance of rigorous training and selection within the air force.
General Gábor Böröndi, Chief of the General Staff, confirmed that the helicopter capability has now been fully established. The next steps, he said, involve training, operational readiness, and deployment in missions such as disaster relief and special operations. He added that both veteran and newly trained young pilots are now ready to operate the fleet.
Dennis Bernitz, head of Western European sales for Airbus Helicopters, praised the development, describing Hungary’s as ‘Europe’s most modern helicopter fleet’.
The H225M is currently in service with 12 countries, including France, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, and Ukraine. Hungary’s completed fleet, tailored with advanced armaments and mission versatility, is poised to strengthen national security and further integrate the country into allied operations across Europe and beyond.
