A top-tier member of the notorious MS-13 gang, who was living in the U.S. illegally, was apprehended in Omaha, Nebraska, this week, according to a press release from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). President Trump’s administration recently designated MS-13 and the Tren de Aragua as terrorist organizations, a move intended to bolster enforcement actions against such transnational criminal groups.
The individual, identified as a fugitive on El Salvador’s list of its 100 most wanted criminals, was taken into custody by ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). ICE confirmed the man is considered a gang “kingpin” and is wanted in El Salvador for several severe charges.
“The Salvadoran national is a criminal alien wanted in El Salvador for the aggravated homicide of five victims; attempted aggravated homicide; deprivation of liberty; and terrorist organization affiliation,” ICE stated. The agency did not release the suspect’s name.
Another illegal immigrant arrested alongside him was identified as Rene Saul Escobar Ochoa, 30. ICE described him as an MS-13 associate also wanted by Salvadoran authorities. According to the agency, both individuals were living together in Omaha.
“His associate, Rene Saul Escobar Ochoa, 30, is a criminal alien, known MS-13 gang member and foreign terrorist also wanted in El Salvador. Escobar Ochoa is accused of giving orders to fellow gang members to commit a variety of crimes, including multiple homicides, extortion, imprisonment and drug trafficking,” the ICE release said. The agency emphasized the danger they posed to the Omaha community.
“These illegal aliens didn’t just sneak into our country; they brought with them a legacy of violence, terror and death,” said HSI Kansas City Special Agent in Charge Mark Zito. “They thought they could hide in America’s heartland, but they were sadly mistaken. Not on our watch.”
In a separate incident in Indiana, ICE agents arrested Jonny Handy Martinez-Barillas, a 30-year-old Honduran national affiliated with MS-13, according to Breitbart News. He had previously been incarcerated in Maryland but was released in 2023 when local authorities failed to honor an ICE detainer, despite his charges of first-degree murder and firearm possession.
The White House stated this week that most of the recent ICE arrests involve illegal immigrants with prior convictions or pending criminal charges, Breitbart reported.
