President Donald Trump trolled New York Democrat Senator Chuck Schumer during a discussion on the deadly floods that broke out in the Texas Hill Country over the Fourth of July weekend, alleging that the Senate minority leader has a habit of blaming the president for crises. He also labeled Schumer a “Palestinian Senator” and claimed that he had “abandoned the Jews.” Trump further asserted that Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) could defeat Schumer in a hypothetical 2028 Democratic primary.
‘Palestinian Senator’

Speaking during a public event focused on recent Texas floods, Trump derisively referred to Schumer, who is Jewish, as “a Palestinian senator.” Said the president of the highest elected Jewish official in the country, “I saw a Palestinian senator, his name is Schumer. He’s a great Palestinian. … He’s become a Palestinian. He has abandoned the Jews.” Trump noted Schumer’s criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and demands for better conditions for Palestinians.
Not the First Time

President Trump has repeatedly used the word “Palestinian” to describe Schumer, with many civil rights groups condemning Trump for allegedly using the term as a “slur.” Said Nihad Awad, the national executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, “President Trump’s use of the term ‘Palestinian’ as a racial slur is offensive and beneath the dignity of his office. He should apologize to the Palestinian and American people. It is the continuing dehumanization of the Palestinian people that has resulted in horrific hate crimes against Palestinian-Americans, the U.S.-enabled genocide in Gaza and decades of denial of Palestinian human rights by successive presidential administrations.” Notably, Trump also called Schumer “a proud member of Hamas” back in February.
Schumer Blamed Texas Floods on Trump

President Trump further claimed that the Senate minority leader tried to blame him for the devastating floods in Texas, alleging that Schumer has a habit of politicizing tragedy. “I actually saw that stupid guy try and blame [the Texas flooding] on me, and I said, ‘Man, that’s a tough one to take,’” he said. Following the deadly floods that claimed more than 100 lives, Senator Schumer called for a formal investigation into staffing shortages at National Weather Service offices and questioned whether these vacancies may have affected the agency’s ability to issue timely and accurate warnings ahead of the disaster. While the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency has targeted NWS for cuts, the reductions will not take effect till October.
‘AOC is Gonna Beat Him’

Trump also claimed that Schumer’s political career is heading towards an end because, “I hear AOC is gonna beat him.” Notably, a survey from May placed Ocasio-Cortez with a 21-point edge over Schumer in a hypothetical 2028 Democratic primary. “The Honan Strategy Group survey, conducted May 15-18 for the Jewish Voters Action Network, shows AOC leading 54 percent to 33 percent among likely Democratic voters in New York City,” reports have mentioned. It has been reported that Schumer’s support base has taken a hit since he voted to advance a GOP funding bill in February that avoided a government shutdown.
