For much of the past year, there have been rumors about former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama going their separate ways.
One writer recently highlighted some unusual comments from Mrs. Obama which might suggest that their marriage is indeed about to explode.
“My life is not about my husband”
Samuel Short is a contributor for the Western Journal, and in an article published on Thursday, he cited remarks made by the former first lady earlier this week.
“This stage in life for me, for me personally, is the first time that I’ve been completely free,” Mrs. Obama was quoted as saying.
“Where every choice that I make in my life is not about my husband, not about his career, not about what my kids need or where they’re going. It’s totally about me,” she added.
That statement came during Wednesday’s episode of the IMO podcast, which the former first lady cohosts alongside her younger brother, Craig Robinson.
Funeral absence spurs rumor mill
Short characterized Mrs. Obama’s words as “eerie,” saying, “The word ‘free’ can give rise to a lot of speculation. Happily married couples don’t often talk about being ‘free’ from their spouse.”
What’s more, Short recalled the fact that the former first lady did not accompany her husband to former President Jimmy Carter’s state funeral this past January.
As Fox News pointed out, her absence was acknowledged in a statement released by the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama.
“Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. Former first lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration,” the statement read.
“Everybody would know”
For her part, Mrs. Obama has consistently denied that she has any plans to divorce the former president, as was evident when she appeared on The Diary of a CEO podcast in May.
“If I were having problems with my husband, everybody would know about it,” Mrs. Obama insisted to host Steven Bartlett.
She then went on to lament America’s high divorce rate, stating, “I think that people give up too quickly on marriage.”
“And if you’re not getting help, talking about it, going to therapy, just understanding how things are changing, and how do you continuously renegotiate your relationship with your partner, I just see people quitting,” the former first lady complained.
