In the political world, the big players regarding campaign strategy all work with the biggest names, and it is a very tight circle.
Well, Barack Obama’s circle just grew to include the highly controversial mayoral candidate in New York City, Zohran Mamdani.
Mamdani’s campaign just hired Debra Schommer Media Group, the same company that worked with Obama and Pete Buttigieg during their respective presidential campaigns.
Big umbrella
While not all Democrats are happy that Mamdani’s star is on the rise (we will get to that in just a bit), some in the establishment are clearly embracing him.
That starts with DNC Chairman Ken Martin, who just brushed off the fact that Mamdani will not denounce the phrase “globalize the intifada,” which many take as an expression to destroy Israel and all Jews.
When asked about Mamdani and his stance, Martin stated, “There’s no candidate in this party that I agree 100% of the time with, to be honest with you. There are things that I don’t agree with Mamdani that he said, but at the end of the day, I always believe, as a Democratic Party chair in Minnesota for the last 14 years and now the chair of the DNC, that you win through addition.”
He later added, “You win by bringing people into your coalition. We have conservative-Democrats, we have centrist-Democrats, we have labor-progressives like me, and we have this new brand of Democrat which is the leftists. We win by bringing people into that coalition and at the end of the day, for me, that’s the type of party we’re going to lead. We are a big tent party.”
Bring him in
I could be wrong, but I am thinking that someone like Schommer would not go outside the box unless she had the blessing of Obama. Again, that is speculation on my part, but I find it rather telling that the same woman who worked on all the major Democrat campaigns in recent years has taken an interest in the NYC mayor’s race.
It was just revealed that Mamdani’s campaign paid Schommer about $3 million for its media buys.
With the success that Schommer has had in the past, there are concerns that the Dems are bringing in the big guns to help Mamdani win this race.
Targeted Victory executive VP Matt Gorman had a bit of a different take, stating, “Mamdani and his team will throw millions at voters to run from his positions. Consultants can work wonders, but they’re not miracle workers. A communist is still a communist.”
Not everyone is happy
While many Dems have embraced Mamdani already, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) has suddenly found himself at war with Mamdani allies who have announced that they will be primarying Jeffries for his seat in the upcoming mid-erm elections.
His office responded to the attack, stating, “Leader Hakeem Jeffries is focused on taking back the House from the MAGA extremists who just ripped health care away from millions of Americans.”
The statement continued, “However, if Team Gentrification wants a primary fight, our response will be forceful and unrelenting. We will teach them and all of their incumbents a painful lesson on June 23, 2026.”
He is not alone, either, as Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) has also pushed back, stating, “Everything that I’ve read on him, I don’t really agree with virtually any of it, politically. That’s just where I’m at as a Democrat. He’s not even a Democrat, honestly.” The battle lines have been drawn, so now we get to sit back and see who the last man standing will be.
