Columbia University alumnus Mahmoud Khalil has filed a legal claim seeking $20 million in damages from the Trump administration, alleging wrongful arrest and detention stemming from what his legal team describes as a politically motivated decision.
Khalil, a legal U.S. resident, was released last month after spending over 100 days in federal immigration detention without being charged with a crime. The detention followed efforts by the Trump administration to deport him, citing concerns that his presence in the U.S. could pose a foreign policy threat due to his leadership in pro-Palestinian campus activism at Columbia.
According to the claim, Khalil’s attorneys argue that he was subjected to false arrest, malicious prosecution, abuse of process, and emotional distress. The case centers around a determination by then-Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who reportedly concluded Khalil’s activism presented a national security concern.
While Khalil is seeking monetary damages, his legal team stated he would accept an official apology and a reversal of the policy in question instead of financial compensation.
The case is pending, with further legal proceedings expected.
