Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is facing serious legal trouble after being charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault involving three different women. The alleged incidents reportedly took place between 2021 and 2022.
The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed the charges on Friday, July 4, following an investigation by London’s Metropolitan Police. Partey, 32, is expected to appear in Westminster Magistrates Court on August 5.
Partey’s attorney, Jenny Wiltshire, told the BBC that the former Premier League player denies the allegations and “welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.” She declined to provide additional comment as of Saturday, July 5.
According to prosecutors, the charges include two counts of rape related to one woman, three counts involving a second woman, and one count of sexual assault against a third.
“This decision was made after a careful review of a comprehensive file of evidence,” said Jaswant Narwal, Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London North. “Criminal proceedings are now active, and Mr. Partey is entitled to a fair trial. We urge the public and media to avoid any commentary that could affect the legal process.”
Partey’s former club, Arsenal FC, confirmed that his contract expired on June 30, just days before the charges were made public. A spokesperson said the team would not comment further due to ongoing legal proceedings.
Partey joined Arsenal in 2020 following a high-profile transfer from Atlético Madrid for £45 million (roughly $61.4 million). He played in 35 Premier League games this past season and helped the club secure second place in the standings.
In June, the Ghanaian international had shared an Instagram post celebrating his third Ghana Player of the Year award. He also highlighted his foundation’s recognition with the Football for Good award, thanking supporters and saying, “I couldn’t have done it without you all.”
