Black voters are unquestionably a core constituency of the Democratic Party, and that is bad news for the leading Democrat running to be New York City’s next mayor, Zohran Mamdani.
Some black New Yorkers are reportedly furious over the recent revelation that Mamdani, who was born in Africa of parents from India, once fraudulently claimed that he was “black or African-American” in a college admissions application, the New York Post reported.
If a substantial portion of black New Yorkers maintain that fury and refuse to vote for Mamdani in the general election later this year, that could spell doom for the openly declared democratic socialist’s mayoral ambitions.
Mamdani claimed he was “black” on a college admission application
The New York Times reported this week that, following a recent hack of Columbia University, it was provided with some “internal data” from the Ivy League school about the 2009 admissions application submitted by Mamdani when he was a senior in high school.
In the section of the application that asked about his racial identity, which was a major factor for the university that stridently adhered to affirmative action at the time, Mamdani checked the boxes that said he was “Asian” and “Black of African-American,” though he further explained elsewhere in the application that he was born in Uganda.
Asked by The Times about that questionable response on the application, Mamdani said he considered himself to be “an American who was born in Africa” and not “black” or “African-American,” and added, “Most college applications don’t have a box for Indian-Ugandans, so I checked multiple boxes trying to capture the fullness of my background.”
Notably enough, in light of the aforementioned affirmative action practices of the prestigious university — not to mention the fact that his father was and still is a professor at Columbia — Mamdani’s application for admission was rejected, albeit for unknown reasons.
It should also be pointed out that, technically, Mamdani was not even an “American” at that time, much less one of African descent, either, as the legal immigrant didn’t become a naturalized U.S. citizen until 2018.
Black New Yorkers call Mamdani a “fraud,” “liar,” and “trickster”
The Post reported that many black New Yorkers were outraged over the fraudulent racial identity claims of the “trickster” Mamdani, who recently won the Democratic primary election and, according to most polls, holds a sizeable lead over all other contenders in the upcoming mayoral race for the Big Apple.
“He’s just trying to get over,” Harlem resident Marjorie, 86, told the outlet, and noted, “You can look at him and see he’s not” black. “Absolutely not,” she added, “I don’t like him. I didn’t like him from the first time I heard him. You can look at him and see he’s a trickster.”
An unnamed black New Yorker said, “He’s a fraud. He’s a foreigner. He ain’t no African American,” while a Bronx resident named Joshua stated of Mamdani, “He’s a liar. Point-blank, period. We don’t need a lying mayor or a mayor that says he’s black so he can get black people to vote for him,” and added, “We black. We ain’t stupid.”
Ironically, it was just a few months ago in April when Mamdani was approached while campaigning by a black street performance artist and was asked directly if he considered himself to be an African-American, to which he replied at that time that such a claim from him would be “misleading” to the public.
Mayor Adams says Mamdani’s racial claims were “deeply offensive” to actual black Americans
The New York Post reported separately that black incumbent Mayor Eric Adams was among those who took exception to The Times’ report about his electoral opponent’s fraudulent racial identity claim in 2009, which he viewed as an “insult” and stated, “The African American identity is not a checkbox of convenience. It’s a history, a struggle, and a lived experience. For someone to exploit that for personal gain is deeply offensive.”
Adams’ campaign spokesman Todd Shapiro said, “It’s now clear that Zohran Mamdani misrepresented his racial identity to gain admission to Columbia University, and at the time, he wasn’t even a U.S. citizen. This is not just dishonest — it’s possibly fraudulent.”
“It may have taken a place away from a qualified African American applicant and misused a process designed to correct real, systemic inequities,” the spokesman added. “We need answers. Because the people of New York deserve to know whether the man asking for their vote built his career on a possibly fraudulent foundation.”
