Rapper and businessman Sean “Diddy” Combs managed to beat the worst of the charges in his high-profile criminal case.
Diddy was facing a total of five charges, but the most serious of these was a RICO count.
The jury came back with a guilty verdict on four of the charges, but needed more time to deliberate on the fifth charge, bringing Diddy to his knees in celebration when “not guilty” was read by the jury.
The worst is over
Diddy was facing five charges: Racketeering conspiracy (a maximum sentence of life in prison), sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion (a minimum sentence of 15 years. A maximum of life in prison), transportation to engage in prostitution (a maximum sentence of 10 years), sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion (a minimum sentence of 15 years. A maximum of life in prison), and Transportation to engage in prostitution (a maximum sentence of 10 years).
The first set of charges took the jury about 13 hours of deliberation to deliver a verdict, but it was stuck on the RICO charge.
In her summation, prosecutor Maurene Comey stated, “In his mind he was untouchable. The defendant never thought that the women he abused would have the courage to speak out loud what he had done to them.”
As the verdict was read aloud, Combs was clearly relieved that the most serious charge was wiped off the books, but he is hardly out of trouble just yet.
Judge Arun Subramanian thanked the jury for its work, stating, “You listened, you worked together, you were here every day, rain or shine. You did so with no reward, other than the reward that comes from answering the call of public service.”
The question now is whether the judge will drop the hammer on Combs and order sentences served consecutively or concurrently. If the former, Combs may never see the outside of prison again.
The next question to be answered is whether President Donald Trump will pardon Diddy, as he did not shy away from considering it when the media had asked him about it before.
Trump said that after the case concluded, he would look at it to decide if Diddy had been treated properly, but he clearly did not rule out the possibility of issuing a pardon.
I would hope that Trump’s advisers tell him to stay as far away from this case as possible, as it is a time bomb for the GOP if Trump takes it no.
Whatever sentence he gets, keep your mouth shut, and let him serve it (and yes, I think he deserves the book to be thrown at him for what he did to those women).
